Lady Bears Soccer Program Volunteer Night at Blessings in a Backpack

Lady Bears Soccer Program Volunteer Night at Blessings in a Backpack

Lady Bears Spend Off Night in Service

Milton, Georgia – The Cambridge Girls Soccer program spent their evening off the pitch and in service on Wednesday, February 9th.  Both the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams volunteered at Blessings In a Backpack to help families with food insecurity in Fulton County.

Blessings in a Backpack, a national organization was originally founded in Kentucky when a teacher observed that children at her school, who participated in the free or reduced meal program, were returning to school on Mondays tired, hungry and not ready to learn. She came to understand that there was little or no food for the children to eat at home on the weekends. In 2008, Blessings in a Backpack, Inc. was formed to provide these students with backpacks of food that would provide three meals a day over the weekend.

A current resident of Milton, and former Cambridge Girls Soccer Mom, Lynn Floum wanted to help the food insecure. Floum reached out to the national organization of Blessings in a Backpack and started her own chapter for North Fulton in 2016.  They organize weekend food packed in plastic bags which is then distributed to the kids in their backpacks.

The Bears proudly came together as a team in service to others in the community.  Their service began last week when each player donated milk and granola bars for future packing events at Blessings in a Backpack.  Tonight, they unloaded deliveries of food, separated the boxes according to each bag's contents and prepared 200 bags for children to take home over the long upcoming President's Day weekend.
