Cambridge Girls Varsity Soccer Team Defeats Wesleyan; Move Up to #5-Ranked Team in State

The Lady Bears Varsity Soccer team (currently ranked #5 in Region AAAAAA for the State of Georgia) hosted Wesleyan on Friday night, February 24th for their last match prior to the open of regional play.  On "youth night" when the Lady Bears also hosted future Cambridge players, the Lady Bears secured their fourth win of the season and went to 4-1 on the season as they defeated the visitors from Wesleyan by a score of 2-1.

Leigh Hamblin led the way with both of the Lady Bear goals (tallying all three of the Lady Bears' goals in the last two matches).  The first goal was scored with approximately 10 minutes to play in the first half when Carly Shayne played a nifty ball that allowed Leigh to get in behind the Wesleyan defense and calmly finish to the lower left hand corner of the goal. The Lady Bears maintained their 1-0 lead into halftime and throughout much of the second half. Late in the second half, Leigh notched her second goal of the night (assisted by Natalia Tovar) to give the Lady Bears a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately, the shutout was lost when Wesleyan scored a goal with less than a minute remaining to play but the Lady Bears ultimately prevailed 2-1.

Coach Swanburg commented after the match that "this was a great win over Wesleyan…I can't wait to take on #2-ranked Pope Tuesday night in our first region matchup!  We have worked hard this preseason to get where we are and we are ready to bring our best.  Huge shoutout to Leigh Hamblin for putting in three goals in two games and to those players working off the ball creating the space for her to do so."

The Lady Bears will open regional play as they host Pope on Tuesday, February 28 (kickoff at 5.55pm) and will visit Centennial as they continue regional play on Friday, March 3.

Go Lady Bears!
