Lady Bears Soccer Advances to GHSA State Quarterfinals

Lady Bears Soccer Advances to GHSA State Quarterfinals

The Lady Bears Varsity Soccer team hosted the Panthers from Lakeside Evans High School (Augusta) in the second round of the girls' state soccer championship tournament on Wednesday May 4th.

The Lady Bears advanced to the quarterfinals continuing their deepest run into the State Tournament since the program's inception by defeating Lakeside Evans 3-0.

The Lady Bears were settled and in control of the ball and the match from the opening whistle although it took nearly 30 minutes of continuous pressure on the Lakeside defense before Lakeside bent and allowed the Lady Bears to notch the opening goal and relieve some of the pressure. The opening goal came when Charlotte Teeter switched fields deep in the Panthers defensive third allowing Cambridge to put a shot on goal that was initially saved by the Panthers' keeper but which resulted in a rebound on the door step that was easily tucked home by Natalia Garcia.

The game went to halftime with the Lady Bears leading 1-0; however, Cambridge extended their lead to 2-0 only one minute into the second half when Mary Koch beat the Panthers keeper high from relatively close range (assisted by Julia Schukle). Cambridge wrapped up the scoring when Charlotte connected with her head off a Natalia Garcia corner kick with approximately 17 minutes left to play.

The midfield play was once again strong, with Cambridge controlling possession and continuously feeding balls to the forward line to create pressure on the Panthers' defense.  The midfield was led by Carly Shayne, Amy Pollmann, and Amanda Feely.  En route to yet another shutout, the defense was led by Nikki Hlebec, Leigh Hamblin, Kiely Gaertner, Tyra Quam, Allyson Curl, and Reagan Dunwoodie (goalkeeper).

The Lady Bears advance to the quarterfinals of the state tournament and, thanks to a favorable flip of the coin, will host McIntosh High School at Cambridge High School on Saturday, May 7.

Go Lady Bears!
