Lady Bears Soccer Shuts Out MLK 10-0 to Advance to Second Round of State Tourney

The Lady Bears Varsity Soccer team hosted the Lady Lions from Martin Luther King Jr. High School (#3 Seed from Region 6) in the opening round of the girls' state soccer championship tournament on Wednesday, April 27th.

The Lady Bears, coming off of a long layoff and missing several players due to injury and illness, showed no signs of rust and cruised to a 10-0 victory in a game shortened by approximately 35 minutes due to score differential to secure their first ever state tournament win!

The Lady Bears opened the scoring approximately 10 minutes into the first half, found the second a second time 10 minutes later and then found the finishing touch and poured it on from there. Goals were scored by:

  • Natalia Garcia, who opened the scoring, and went on to secure a hat trick (assisted on two of her goals by Kat Powers and Natalia Tovar);
  • Julia Schukle, who scored the second goal of the game on an easy tuck in after bringing a nicely played ball by Charlotte Teeter (who went on to score one of her own later in the game) under control near to the goal;
  • Hannah Behner, who scored two goals, one assisted by Leigh Hamblin on an extended run from her defensive position;
  • Kat Powers, who scored two goals – one unassisted and one on a nice finish assisted by Sara Bailey; and
  • Allyson Curl, who scored the final goal of the game.

While not really put under pressure throughout the match, the shutout was recorded by a combination of Reagan Dunwoodie and Hannah Marrone in goal with the defense led by Kiely Gaertner, Leigh Hamblin, Tyra Quam, Mary Koch and Isabella Godby and a combination of Carly Shayne, Amanda Feely, Natalia Tovar, Sara Bailey and Meredith Haak controlling the midfield.

The Lady Bears advance to the second round of the state tournament and will host Lakeside Evans at Cambridge High School on Wednesday, May 4 as they seek to keep their playoff run alive and advance to the quarterfinals.

Go Lady Bears!
