Lady Bears Soccer Secures State Playoff Spot with Dominant Win over #10-Ranked Rome

The Lady Bears Varsity Soccer team (currently ranked #9 in the State of Georgia) secured a spot in the State tournament for the third time in the program's four-year history with a win in the opening round of the Region 7 tournament. The Lady Bears continued their near unblemished run in regional play as they beat #10-ranked Rome at Cambridge High School on Tuesday night, April 12th by a score of 5-2.

The Lady Bears opened the scoring approximately 20 minutes into the first half on a goal scored by Julia Schukle as she neatly tapped a through ball away from the keeper for an easy tap in.  The lead didn't last long as the Lady Bears conceded the equalizer within minutes of the opener when Rome's striker took advantage of her outstanding speed to get in behind the Lady Bears' defense and score to even the score 1-1.  From there, the Lady Bears scored two more goals – one by Nikki Hlebec on a ball headed into the goal off a corner kick taken by Carly Shayne and the second goal by Carly Shayne – to take a 3-1 lead into halftime.

The visitors from Rome came out with renewed energy to start the second half and found the goal once again to close the gap to 3-2 before the Lady Bears scored two more goals – one by Carly Shayne (her second of the game) and the second by Charlotte Teeter – on their way to an eventual 5-2 victory.

The Lady Bears controlled possession in the midfield through much of the game, with midfielders Carly Shayne, Amanda Feely and Amy Pollmann leading the way and had another solid performance on defense led by Nikki Hlebec, Leigh Hamblin, Kiely Gaertner, Tyra Quam and goalkeepers Hannah Marrone and Reagan Dunwoodie

The Lady Bears go 7-1 in regional play and will continue their season with the following upcoming regional and state tournament matches.  Matches beyond those set out below will be dependent on winning prior matches in the state tournament.
