Lady Bears Varsity Soccer Drops Season Opener to Etowah 2-1, Friday, Feb. 12th

Lady Bears Varsity Soccer Drops Season Opener to Etowah 2-1, Friday, Feb. 12th

The Lady Bears Varsity Soccer team dropped its season opener against the Etowah Eagles by a score of 2-1 on Friday night, Feb. 12th.

The game opened slowly with both teams taking time to feel each other out and settle into the flow of the match. On balance, the Lady Bears appeared to control more of the possession early on but failed to generate quality scoring chances.

Approximately 10 minutes into the first half, the visitors from Etowah capitalized on a counter-attack that developed rapidly off of some choppy play around midfield and resulted in a shot from distance (approximately 25-30 yards from goal) that found the upper right hand corner of the goal.  The Eagles extended their lead to 2-0 with 18 minutes to play in the first half off of a scramble in front of the Lady Bear's goal that followed a corner kick and attempted clearance.

The second half opened with an increase in intensity from the Lady Bears as they generated near continuous pressure on the Etowah Eagles from kickoff.  Their efforts were rewarded when they narrowed the score to 2-1 on a goal scored by Allyson Curl off a cross from Carly Dickman.  Unfortunately, the Lady Bears were unable to get the equalizer in the remaining time and absorbed the loss by a final score of 2-1.

The Lady Bear record on the season is 0-1.  They have two matches this week as the season gets into full swing – a Tuesday night (Feb. 16) match at Roswell High School with kickoff scheduled for 5.55pm before returning to Cambridge for a Friday night (Feb. 19) match (kickoff at 5.30pm) against the Lambert Longhorns (last year's AAAAAA state runner up).

In addition, Friday night is "youth night" at Cambridge High School; all future Cambridge soccer players will enjoy free admission as well as a "meet and greet" with Coach Swanburg and the team.

Go Bears!
