Lady Bears Varsity Soccer Lose Heartbreaker to Pope, 2-1

The Lady Bears Varsity Soccer team lost a heartbreaker to the 2nd place team in the region, the Pope Greyhounds, 2-1 on Monday, March 24th.

The first half was an even match with Pope making 5-shots on goal while Cambridge had 4-shots on goal. Even though Pope had several corner kicks, the Lady Bears did not allow any balls to get in the goal. Possession was even throughout the first half and after 40 minutes the score was tied, 0-0.

Pope came out of half time much more aggressively and scored on a corner kick within the first two minutes of the second half. The Pope mid-field and forwards were pushing the ball up consistently keeping it in the Cambridge half of the field for much of the first 20 minutes of the second half. The Cambridge defense did a good job denying goals.

Twenty minutes into the second half the Lady Bears caught their second wind and started driving the ball deep into Greyhound territory. With 10 minutes left in the game Cambridge mid-fielder Amy Pollmann stole the ball from a Pope defender and took a shot outside the 18 and placed the ball in the lower right corner of the goal, tying the game at 1-1.

For the remaining 10 minutes of the game the Lady Bears and Pope went after each other creating scoring opportunities for both sides but neither team could capitalize. With 4-minutes left in the game, the Pope forwards were charging and made a nice cross at the top of the box and a Pope player was able to place it in the right corner of the goal. Cambridge did not quit and kept pushing the ball up field but time ran out before the Lady Bears could even the score.

Final score was 2-1, for a Pope victory.
