The 2020-2021 wrestling season was historic in many ways. The Bears made history sending 13 wrestlers to the GHSA Traditional State Championships in Macon (February 10 – 13), sent their first girl wrestler to State and, lastly, this season was historic because this extraordinary group of athletes and coaches persevered during a national pandemic.
Girls State began on Wednesday, February 10th and by late Thursday night Lindsey Noble earned her 3rd place medal with a fall at 4.5 minutes in her eighth match in two days. Six of Lindsey's winning matches were by fall!
The Boys began wrestling on Thursday and by Friday night, 7 wrestlers earned hardware to bring back to Milton!
Connor McHugh, 6A Region Champ @220 entered the tournament undefeated and coasted through the first day with all wins, two by fall. Kurtz battled hard before suffering a loss by 2-0 decision in the semifinal round to a wrestler that transferred from out of state. Kurtz returned the second day of wrestling to win both matches and earn his 3rd place medal. This was the third time Kurtz, a senior, has medaled at GHSA Traditional State!
Nicholas Barton, 6A Region Champ @160 scored 17 team points by pinning 3 of his 5 opponents all in the first period of each match! Barton squared off with a nationally ranked and undefeated wrestler in the semifinals and ultimately lost moving him to the consolation round.
