
In the early game, the Junior Varsity Lady Bears defeated the Westminster Wildcats 9-7 on Thursday March 24th.
With gritty determination after quickly falling behind 3-0 after only a couple minutes of regulation play, the JV Lady Bears woke up and poured it on both defensively and offensively to beat the Wildcats. The defense, led by Sophomores Lyndsay Bagwell at goal and Daisy Valeo created headaches for the Wildcats making some great saves and creating numerous turnovers. Offensively, Katherine Dunn, Mackenzie Reed, and Ally Kench led the charge.
First year Coach Sarah Nerswick was certainly pleased. "Westminster started fast. The girls could have easily given up early on but settled in and took over the game on both sides of the field. Really proud to see the effort and progress the girls have made."
In the nightcap, the Varsity Lady Bears battled the Wildcats in a thrilling double overtime game to win 13-12.
After being down 5 goals with less than 10 minutes to play in the game, Seniors Melissa Birdsell and Taylor Sanna along with Sophomore Ally Schnetzka led the charge to tie the game at the end of regulation play. Sophomore Landyn White made some key saves along the way and the defense led by Sophomores Caroline Harris and Bailey Hawkins created numerous turnovers.
In overtime, both teams had opportunities to score the winning goal with the Lady Bears again stepping it up on the defensive end causing key turnovers and saves, which would lead to a buzzer beating goal by Freshman Abby Edmisten.
The Lady Bears improve their overall record to 6-3-1 and remain undefeated in regional area play.
"I'm just so proud of the way the girls have pulled together as a team," says Pam Masinko, Coach of the Lady Bears. "This is our toughest schedule yet and the girls are getting better with every game. It's great to see as a coach and certainly helps prepare us for the playoffs."
The Lady Bears next play cross town rivals Blessed Trinity on Tuesday, March 29th at home. Varsity Game time is 5:55 PM; and Junior Varsity Game time is 4:30 PM.
