CAMBRIDGE BEARS FINISH THE SEASON AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIP - LOOK FORWARD TO NEXT SEASON

On May 9-11, the Cambridge track and field team competed at the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) state championship in Carrollton, Georgia. During the first two days of competition, the girls were situated among the top three team positions in 5A. The team eventually finished in the top ten in the state in 5A. They were led by Lilah Versluis and Sanam Rangaraj

Ms. Versluis had an outstanding meet and was able to score in all three of her events, as she won the state championship in the high jump (after finishing second last year); placed sixth in the long jump; and fifth in the triple jump. These state medals raised her total count in the past two years to five individual medals (tying her with her sister Julia Versluis for the most in school history). Her victory in the high jump was her second state championship (after winning triple jump last year). Her senior season looks very bright next year.

Ms. Rangaraj finished her excellent season in track and field by finishing second in the 3200 meters (in the second fastest time in school history) and third in the 1600 meters (also the second fastest time in school history). She was able to win the state championship in cross country in 5A last November and has certainly made her mark in distance races across this state. An extremely hard worker and a pleasure to have had the opportunity to watch her run and encourage her teammates. As she graduates later this month, she will certainly be missed.

Also, scoring at state and securing their medal for the girls were the 4x200 meter relay team of Hannah Jones, Jensen Kelley, Kai McCarley and Taylor Lasoff. The quartet are all expected back next season and are the current school record holders in the event.

For the boys, they were lead by Ibrahim Bangura and Seth Odom.  Mr. Bangura raised his total of state individual medals to four as he replicated his work from last year. He was able to score sixth in the 110 meter hurdles and also scored in the 300 meter hurdles. He is the current school record holder in the 110 meter hurdles. As he heads into his senior season next year, his future looks very promising.

Seth Odom finished his noteworthy season by finishing fifth in the 800 meters. Mr. Odom is a hard working and quiet leader that has made steady improvement in all his efforts this season. He is the current school record holder in  the 800 meters.  He has the range that allows him to run the 400 meters to the 5K. As he graduates later this month, one school will get an outstanding young man to compete on their behalf on the collegiate level.

A special thank you should go to all the track and field seniors and their families for being a vital part of the process of creating a championship team. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Track Bears for Life!
