Cambridge Varsity Football Takes On Lumpkin County in Season Opening Scrimmage

BEAR fans, football season started Friday, August 7th at Lumpkin County in a scrimmage game.

The Lumpkin County Indians team is in class 3A from Dahlonega. Like last year's scrimmage against the Indians, Bears Head Coach Craig Bennett sees this as a dress rehearsal for the coaches to observe and discover play and player readiness as opposed to playing with a Win/Loss emphasis.  It will give them the video tool to prepare for the season opener Saturday, August 22 against Holy Innocents.

Cambridge started out strong in the scrimmage and jumped to a quick 7-0 lead with 8:25 left in the 1st quarter on a big 3rd down conversion passing play of 25 yards from quarterback Cameron Moore to Spencer Gaddis and a strong run to the end zone by running back Kaelin Byrd.  The Bears next possession resulted in another score and PAT to put the Bears up 14-0 with 5:46 left in the 2nd quarter.  That drive was led by timely passsing and great offense line play that led to another touchdown run by Kaelin Byrd.

The next possession by the Indians resulted in a short quarterback sneak for a touchdown followed by a successful PAT closing the score to 14-7.  However, the Bears were not to be denied as they immediately came back on a 15 yard touchdown run by quarterback Cameron Moore and another successful PAT giving the Bears a 21-7 lead with 1:53 left in the first half.

The Bears took the opportunity to play mostly their young players in the 3rd quarter while the Indians continued to play their starters throughout the quarter.  The 4th quarter continued the youth movement with both teams giving their younger players an opportunity to gain valuable experience.

It was a good night in Lumpkin County and the scrimmage will allow our coaches to establish the team's readiness and allow the Bears to work on areas to be shored up going into the 1st game of the season on 8/22/15 at Holy Innocents.

Please come out to cheer on and support our 2015 Bears!

Go Bears!
