The Region 7A Cambridge Bears Football team, who is looking for its first win (0-3) will play the Region 7B (1-3) Marietta Pope Greyhounds Friday September 27th in the first Bears' home game of the season.
Cambridge has been narrowing the scoring gap and showing real competitiveness each game so far this season. Pope defeated Northview last week in a close game finishing 28-24. Pope QB Taylor Wolf threw for 145 yards to favored receiver Logan Carr. Carr scored 3 TDs and averaged 6 yards a play, with a long of 25 yard pass from Wolf. Previous losses for Pope were to 6A Wheeler and Etowah when they lost by big margins.
Cambridge will have home advantage and some excitement building from a close game, (5-0 L), last week against Osborne. If Cambridge defense can hold Pope like they did Osborne, we should have a fun night of football at Cambridge stadium.
Cambridge Athletic Director Matt Lawless the entire team has worked extremely long hours to get ready for tonight. "Our football program, under the leadership of Coach Craig Bennett, began to prepare for year two almost immediately after our inaugural season ended last year. This involved the hiring of new coaches to complement our existing coaching staff, logging long hours both in the weight room and on the practice field, and teaching and coaching our team to be as successful as it can possibly be in year two. Our coaches and players have worked tirelessly to accomplish their goals as a team in 2013, and I'm proud of the time, effort, and passion that everyone has put into this season thus far. I'm confident that we will see a return on our investment in the weight room, classroom, and practice field not only this season and for years to come. The future looks bright for Cambridge Bears Football."
Don't miss your chance to be a part of all the events at Cambridge High School tonight. The Bears will have a pep rally during the school day and a pre-game event at the stadium from 5:15 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.. The event will begin with a concert, and you can purchase a t-shirt package which includes hamburgers/hotdogs and a drink, a Cambridge Blue t-shirt, and admission to the game. All Cambridge High School students and staff will be able to purchase the t-shirt package for $15.00. If you have an Athletic Pass, it will cost $10.00. For everyone else, the cost is $20.00. All middle school students must be accompanied by an adult at the game, who may purchase the t-shirt package or just a game ticket for $7.00.
If you ordered spirit wear or purchased memberships through the Cambridge Athletic Association, tables will be set up in front of the stadium for you to pick up your items.
Because we anticipate a large crowd, you are encouraged to use the free parking at Stone Creek Church which has graciously allowed us to use their parking lot. There will be attendants there to direct you.
CHS Principal Ed Spurka says it's hard to believe that we are finally playing the first home game tonight. "Our students, faculty and parents are excited to welcome Pope High School and celebrate our second season. Our coaching staff and our football team have grown in numbers, and our cheerleaders have even more spirit in year two! Our marching band has almost doubled in size and the Cambridge community will hear our fight song Friday night. We are all excited for Friday night and wish our football team the best of luck. Coach Bennett and his football program know that the faculty and the Cambridge community are behind them united!"
Kick off is at 7:30 p.m.
We'll see you tonight for one of the great school events of the year.
Go Bears!!
