Friday night's football game was a short but not sweet one for the Cambridge Bears as they took on the Osborne Cardinals on Sept. 20th.
With high expectations coming into the game, the fans who made the trip were impressed right off the kick by the Cambridge defense. Huge hits and smart decisions by the defensive players held the Cardinals scoreless for the entire first quarter. There were so many excellent plays, attempting to list all the defense's successes would take several pages. One play that certainly highlighted the first quarter was a very notable interception in the Osborne end zone by Nathan Kish, which prevented a Cardinal touchdown.
The offense in the first quarter was clearly having a tough time getting going, but the Bears still managed to cover enough yardage for a couple of first downs, which they were unable to convert and ultimately led to punts from #24 Hunter Smith. Tired and sweaty, the defense continued to do battle with the Cardinals, with little rest, and managed to keep the score close with Cambridge 0, Cardinals 3, as the homecoming festivities took over at halftime.
Back on the field looking fresh and raring to go, the Cambridge defense capitalized on the Cardinal's risky passing game. Speed on the field, in the form of #4 Zeke Gormley helped him intercept a long toss, bringing the offense back onto the field. Quarterback Brian Moore managed a nice 25 yard pass off to John Hurst, but with 2 penalties, the gains were lost.
The fourth quarter starred the Bear's defense as they impressively held the Cardinals in the red zone scoreless. A punt block in the end zone gave the Cardinals another two points.
The Cambridge offense finally started finding the needed intensity and rhythm. A picturesque setup from QB Moore to Hurst with good backfield blocking from the line ended in disappointment, and despite some good late game hustle, the offense finished the game with a 5-0 score.
The committed fans of Cambridge Football are eager for the season's first home game in this week's matchup against the Pope Greyhounds. There will be plenty of pregame activities, so be sure to get to the stadium early.
To celebrate this event, there will be a pep rally during the school day and a pre-game event at the stadium from 5:15 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Cambridge will sell a t-shirt package for the event that includes hamburgers/hotdogs with a drink, a Cambridge Blue t-shirt, and admission to a concert and the game.
Kick Off is 7:30 p.m, Friday Sept. 27th.
