Bears Make Big Improvements, but fall to South Forsyth

The Cambridge Bears Varsity Football team plays big in its second home game of the season.

Small victories made for a big impact as the Cambridge Bears took on the 2-0 South Forsyth War Eagles Friday, September 14th.

Cambridge High School Athletic Director Matt Lawless says "it's not about looking at the scoreboard, it's about little victories." "It was an exciting night from making first downs, to field goals, to touchdowns, it's exciting to grow."

During the first half, the Bears defense proved to be more solid than the week before.  Cornerback Brian Moore had a stand out game making tackle after key tackle to stop the War Eagles from scoring. Thomas Johnson also made two critical stops at the goal line to slow down South Forsyth. With a few fumble recoveries and impressive punting by Hunter Smith, the Bears were looking better and better.  The huge boost of energy came when senior and rookie kicker, Hawk Hammer put in his first field goal attempt to score the first-ever points for the Cambridge Bears with 2 seconds on the clock before halftime. The crowd went wild with appreciation of the historic moment and these small victories.

Returning from half-time, JD White exploded with a 45-yard kickoff return.  It was JD again later who scored the first touchdown in Cambridge Varsity football history with a 37-yard run.   Hammer kicking in the point-after made the score 38-10.  Another big, last second play came as Kevin Little threw a 43-yard touchdown to leaping wide receiver, Jordan Sloter, as the game ended with a final score of 45-16.

Head Coach Craig Bennett commented about the excitement experienced by the coaches and players.  Bennett was thrilled that some big plays were made. "The first-ever points scored in a Bears Varsity game, the field goal from Hawk made the night. It was great for the game, even better when we scored touch downs," said Bennett.

The Bears' two losses so far this season have been against Riverwood, who is 2-0 and ranked 34th in Region 5A and South Forsyth who is 3-0 and #49 in Region 6A..

The Bears have now passed North Springs in the 5A region coming in ranked #73 and are only one notch down from next opponent Osborne High School, who is 0-3.

Cambridge takes on the Osborne Cardinals at home Friday, Sept. 21st at 7:30 p.m.
