The skies threatened to open up but held off long enough to allow the Cambridge Bears Varsity Baseball team to defeat the North Atlanta Warriors by a score of 7-1 Monday night, March 14th at Cambridge field.
Buoyed by a strong pitching performance by Austin Weiermiller, who tossed a complete game, and 11 hits by the Cambridge hitters, the Bears cruised to their fourth consecutive region win.
The home team got on the board first with a run in inning two. Brett Hawkins singled to left field driving in Sam Waylock, who was running for catcher Luke Foote who had walked earlier in the inning. After a scoreless third, the Bears pushed their lead to 3-0 in the fourth. Cameron Moore was hit by a pitch and Hawkins followed with a walk. After a stolen base, Moore scored on a balk. Hawkins later came around to score on a single by Davis Dasher.
A Pete Gottschalk double and a single by Bradley Wiedman plated another run in the fifth inning to make the score 4-0. Weiermiller was on cruise control at that point mowing through the Warrior lineup. The 6th inning brought 3 more runs for the Bears as four consecutive hits by Dasher, Weiermiller, Gottschalk and Hayden Onorato closed out the scoring for the Bears. North Atlanta pushed across a run in the 7th to make the final score 7-1 in favor of Cambridge.
Weiermiller got the win allowing a single run on 5 hits with 9 strikeouts and no walks. Senior Pete Gottschalk remained red hot at the plate going 3 for 3 with two doubles and 2 runs scored. Davis Dasher and Hayden Onorato each had a pair of hits, while Weiermiller, Wiedman, Foote and Hawkins each had a hit.
The Bears continue their series on Wednesday, March 16th with a game at North Atlanta at 5:55 PM.
Go Bears!
