Bears Varsity Baseball Suffers 1st Loss to Forsyth Central, Monday, Feb. 29th

The Cambridge Bears Varsity baseball team lost its first game of the season in a region road game at Forsyth Central Monday night, February 29th.  These two equally-matched teams are expected to challenge for the region title this season and the home team got a leg up by winning the first of the three game series.

Austin Weiermiller took the mound for the Bears and pitched commendably for the visitors.  Central's starting pitcher fared even better for the home squad in this highly anticipated pitching duel.

Forsyth Central got on the board first in the second inning courtesy of a walk and a 2-run HR by their third baseman.  After pushing across another run in the third, the home team extended their lead to 5-0 in the 4th after a walk and another 2-run HR by the Forsyth Central shortstop.  The Bears got on the board in the 5th inning in what could have been a much bigger inning.  A Brett Hawkins single got things started.  Cameron Moore reached on an error by the shortstop.  A wild pitch and a ground ball by Crew Cohoes plated the first run of the game for the Bears.  Austin Weiermiller got on by a hit-by-pitch but the rally ended there.

Things looked good in the 6th when Hayden Onorato led off the inning with a double to center against the new Forsyth Central pitcher.  Pete Gottschalk drove him in with a line-drive single to center to make the score 5-2, but a couple of base-running mistakes ended the threat there.  The home team tacked on an unearned run in the bottom of the 6th to make the final score 6-2 in favor of Forsyth Central.

Weiermiller pitched 5 innings allowing 5 runs on 5 hits, striking out 10 and took the loss. Pete Gottschalk led the way offensively with 2 hits and an RBI.  Cameron Moore and Hayden Onorato each had a double.

Cambridge and Forsyth Central square off in game two of the three game series Wednesday night, March 2nd at Cambridge field at 5:55 PM.

Go Bears!
