Cambridge Varsity Softball Takes GHSA Region 7AAAAA Tournament Crown

Cambridge Varsity Softball Takes GHSA Region 7AAAAA Tournament Crown

Last Friday, October 10, the Lady Bears had to battle the Creekview Grizzlies in what was the 3rd game in 4 days.

This time the region championship was on the line.  The Grizzlies came to play once again and started out strongly with a walk, 2 bunts, and a hit which scored 2 runs in the 1st inning.  The Lady Bears went down, 1, 2, 3 with very quick outs in the bottom of the 1st.  In the next inning, the Grizzlies produced another hit, and because of an error by the Bears, Creekview scored another run to go up, 3-0.

Finally in the 4th inning, a familiar story unfolded yet again this season.  Cambridge sophomore Courtney Campbell stepped up to the plate.  She blasted another one over the fence to put the Bears on the board, 3-1.  That was Courtney's 4th home run of the season.  That helped pump up the team as the Bears' defense was solid and allowed only 2 hits from the Grizzlies.  In the bottom of the 5th, Taylor Greene reached on a walk, and big hits from Mariah Kubik and Lauren Stewart produced two more runs to tie the game, 3-3. The score remained tied into the 7th inning.

In the top of the 7th, the Bears shut them down again as pitcher Keara Napoli had a big strikeout, and the defense made two quick plays on the next two batters, keeping the game, 3-3.  Things were tense as the team came up to the plate in the bottom of the 7th.  Bela Bravo got on base with a nice double.  With Bela on 2nd, and 1 out, Mariah Kubik came up with a key hit to the third basemen who overthrew the bag and allowed Bela to get home for the game-winning run!

The Cambridge Varsity Lady Bears softball team wins the GHSA 7AAAAA Region Championship game with a final score of 4-3.

Coach Chip Flemmer says he is excited that his team is back in the state tournament.  "I feel like this year our girls are even more focused and ready to make a run this year."

Cambridge High School Principal Edward Spurka says in this 3rd year, it is amazing how successful our softball program has become! "Our student athletes have been tremendously successful in the classroom and our recent region championship is indicative of how they have balanced the rigor of their coursework with the demands of softball.  Congratulations to our girls and our coaches, and best of luck in States!"

Because of weather delays, the Bears next game has been moved to Thursday, Oct. 16th at Cambridge.  The Bears will host Flowery Branch in a double elimination, first-round game of the state championship.

Be sure to come out at 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to pull for your Lady Bears.  Game 3, if necessary, would be Friday at Cambridge at 5:00 p.m.

Go Bears!!
