Cambridge Varsity Softball to Compete in Region Championship Game

Cambridge Varsity Softball to Compete in Region Championship Game

Region Game #1    Cambridge vs. River Ridge

After three innings, Monday, October 6, the Lady Bears and River Ridge Knights were scoreless as the game was stopped due to an electrical issue with the field lights at Cambridge. The Bears had to head to Creekview High School on Tuesday and start play from the beginning against River Ridge.... and it was quite the game.

The first 2 innings remained scoreless until the top of the 3rd when River Ridge had 2 hits which knocked in 2 runs.  The Bears started a rally in the 5th inning when Bela Bravo hit a nice double,  Lauren Stewart followed with another double, and Taylor Greene hit a single to bring in Bela to score the Bears' first run. Next up Keara Napoli hit a beautiful triple down the right field line to bring Lauren and Taylor in and tie up the game, 3-3. Courtney Campbell hit a nice double, sending Keara home to go ahead, 4-3.  In the 6th inning, the Knights scored another run on an error and tied the game, 4-4.

In the top of the 7th, River Ridge got on base on a walk.  An error moved the runners into scoring position, and the Knights scored twice, as the Bears were down 6-4 heading into the bottom of the 7th. The Bears were fired up and started off the inning with Lily Valeo taking a walk to first, while Keara Napoli got on base with a single.  Then Courtney Campbell stepped up to the plate. With two runners on, Courtney blasted one out of the park with a 3-run bomb to win the game!!!  Coach Chip Flemmer says Courtney's 3-run homer was one of those scenarios that come straight out of a Hollywood movie!  "That was a moment nobody on our team will ever forget!"

What an incredibly intense game as these Lady Bears never give up!  The win qualified the Bears into the first round of the state championship.

Regional Game #2    Cambridge vs. Creekview

Wednesday night, October 8, the Bears traveled to Creekview to take on the Grizzlies.  Pitcher Keara Napoli was on fire and struck out her first nine batters in three innings. The Bears scored a run in the first inning with a hit from Lauren Stewart, followed by Taylor Greene's RBI.  In the top of the 3rd, the Lady Bears put two more runs on the board with hits from Taylor Greene and Lily Valeo, and the Bears took a 3-0 lead.

The Bears scored another run in the 4th with a nice double by Savannah Dixon and a beautiful bunt by Mariah Kubik, which brought Savannah in to score. Game was 4-0.

In the top of 7th, the Bears secured the win with a walk from Taylor Greene and solid hits by Lily Valeo, Keara Napoli, Courtney Campbell, a beautiful double by Abigail Wilson, and additional hits by Savannah Dixon and Bela Bravo. The Lady Bears scored 6, taking the lead, 10-0.

The Bears hung on in the bottom of 7 with another two strikeouts but gave up one run. Cambridge now has its second region tournament victory, 10-1, over Creekview.

Coach Flemmer says the girls played a really good Creekview team.  "It was a solid game all around for our girls.  The region tournament has showed me how our girls can pick each other up whenever we have someone down."

Be sure to make plans to be at the Cambridge softball field, Friday, October 10, at 5:00 p.m., as the Lady Bears plan to take the Regional championship crown.

Go Bears!!
