Bears Win Big Over North Springs, 52-23

Bears Win Big Over North Springs, 52-23

The Cambridge Varsity Football team had a huge win, 52-23, on Friday Oct. 25th against a much improved North Springs team (who has a new coaching staff this year).

The Bears earned their victory with a nice mixture of plays and some standout athletes. The fiery junior, Nick Oakes, played with his usual gusto and although he took some tough hits, he tackled with determination and offensively scored the first touchdown.

Junior Brock Neilson made several impressive rushing plays, one for 15 yards to make it a first and goal scoring opportunity.  Junior wide receiver John Hurst did his part catching the football with a standout reception of 38 yards to set up first and goal for the next touchdown by Brian Moore. Junior defensive end Josh Kania and linebacker Charles Mills were indomitable. Junior quarterback Brian Moore threw 3 touchdown passes and scored 2 touchdowns himself. Junior place kicker Clayton Hammer hit every opportunity given to him to put the ball between the uprights for 9 points.

However, most notable was the dynamic duo of the game, QB Brian Moore who connected repeatedly with junior receiver Hunter Smith. Moore hit Smith twice for 20 yards each on a drive that resulted in a field goal. Moore found Smith who made some improbable catches in a crowded midfield. His TD reception in the third quarter was at the very back of the end zone and with a great leap and reach, as he hauled it in with great boundary awareness to get his toes down.

The juniors didn't do it alone. Standout moments by the seniors also contributed to the win. On special teams, Dashun Soto never fails to awe and surprise the kickoff returner with his fast appearance to stop forward progress. Defender Zeke Gormley makes interceptions seem routine as he once again jumped high to grab the ball and run it back for a touchdown.

A heated moment in the third quarter resulted in 2 personal fouls on the Bears and one on the Spartans.  That seemed to fire up the Spartans and with the advantage of the penalty yardage, they drove in for a touchdown to make the score 31-10.

The sophomores, also a critical part of this second year Bears' team, made their presence known in the likes of Nathan Kish and Trey Wolfe, who pressured the Spartans to throw off target and prevent North Springs touchdowns.  Sophomore Kyle McDougall held on to Moore's long pass of the evening for 40 yards and ran it in for a touchdown to make it 38-10.

The Cambridge coaches have built a strong defense and an ever-improving and expanding offense. They have brought the team to a higher level in this second year. Last night's win earns Cambridge a playoff play-in game, the preliminary round of crossover games where the first place teams play the fourth place teams.

The Bears have one regular season game on Friday, Nov. 1st at home against Sequoyah and then the post-season game on Nov. 8. Details will be forthcoming as the season draws to an end.

Congratulations to the Bears on their third win of the season, and earning a post-season position.

Go Bears!
