Milton, Georgia – The Cambridge Lady Bears won 11-1 in the first round of the 2022 State Playoffs, against the Paulding County High School Patriots, on Thursday, April 14, 2022.
After winning Region 7 for the regular season, the Lady Bears were awarded the number 1 seed in their bracket and home field advantage for the first two rounds of the 2022 GHSA Georgia State Playoffs. The Bears fans showed up dressed in blue for the "blue out" in the stands. Fans were given bells and pom poms and the cheers were loud as the starting 11 were announced.
The offense took control of the game quicker than any game this season. In the first minute, Sophomore forward Aurora Gaines received the ball and made a quick pass to find Junior Jordynn Dudley in the middle of the box who scored her first of five goals in this game. Her second goal was scored less than five minutes later when Freshman Raygen Lewis headed the ball toward Dudley, and she took a hard left foot shot to put the Bears on top 2-0. Within 30 seconds, Aurora Gaines took a hard shot from 15 yards out and the Lady Bears were quickly winning by 3 with 33 minutes left in the first half.
The Lady Bears showed strong defensively as they have all season. Senior Ella Crawley, Junior Sydney Arant and Freshman Raygen Lewis controlled the back and made it difficult for the Patriots to get anything going offensively. The Lady Bears went into halftime with a score of 8-1.
Per GHSA rules, with a lead of 7 goals, the second half was abbreviated to 20 minutes. A lead of 10 goals would end the game. The game was ended on a goal from Junior Forward Gaby Sanchez who scored the 11th goal of the night with a hard shot from the right side of the net. The Lady Bears would win the game by Mercy Rule 11-1.
The Lady Bears will play Heritage High School at home in the Sweet 16 round of the GHSA State Playoffs on Wednesday April 20th at 6:00 pm.
