Cumming, Georgia – In their final Non-Region game, the Cambridge Lady Bears took home a win against the South Forsyth War Eagles, 2-0, on February 23, 2021.
The game started off quickly when just 4 minutes into the first half, the Lady Bears had a scoring opportunity, but they were called off-sides. Just minutes later, Sophomore Gaby Sanchez made a well-played pass to Junior Ella Ciardullo, but the forward was well defended and could not get a good shot on goal.
The first half continued with several free kicks and Bears shots on goal. Ella Ciardullo took a hard shot from 25 yards away, but it was saved by the South Forsyth goalie. Later in the half, Ella Ciardullo would take a quick low shot past the goalie putting the Lady Bears on the board 1-0.
Goalie Olivia Barfield would make 3 fantastic saves in the first half. Junior Ella Crawley and Senior Safiya Said played fast defense for the entire first half, limiting the War Eagles shots on goal with their pressure. The score at halftime was 1-0.
Senior Abby Fields took her place in the goal to start the second half. In the first minute of play, Junior Kate Leibel took a free kick that went high over the net. The Lady Bears would take a corner kick later in the half, but it was well defended by the War Eagles. Freshman, Natalie Leibel took a hard shot that was saved by the goalie.
With less than 20 minutes to go in the game, Sophomore Gaby Sanchez and Junior Ella Ciardullo worked together for a give and go play that sent Sanchez up the sideline with the ball ending with a beautiful left foot shot which hit the back of the net. The Lady Bears went up 2-0.
Abby Fields was shot on 5 times in the second half but would make 2 great saves to keep the Bears on top.
The Lady Bears will go on the road for their first Region game on Friday, February 26th at Centennial High School. Their next home game is March 2nd vs. Chattahoochee High School.
