Lady Bears Varsity Soccer Ties North Atlanta 2-2 in Season Opener

Lady Bears First Home Game Ends in a Draw

Milton, Georgia – After a physical game, the Lady Bears had to settle for a tie with the North Atlanta Warriors in their home opener on Tuesday, February 2, 2021, with a final score of 2-2.

Despite the extremely cold temperatures, the action on the field was quite heated between the two teams.  A yellow card was issued to a Lady Warrior and play resulted in a total of 9 free kicks for the Lady Bears and 6 for the Warriors.

During the first half, a strong 20-yard strike by junior starting forward Ella Ciardullo, assisted by Kyndall Jenkins, put the Lady Bears on top 1-0.  The score remained 1-0 going into half-time.

Early in the second half, with a Warriors offensive player coming up the left side, Olivia Barfield made a smart decision to come out and cut off the angle of the player, but the Warriors scored to tie the game with a clean shot to the right.  Shortly after the Warriors first goal, the Bears defense attempted a strong play on the ball that took an unlucky fall and resulted in an own goal leaving the score 1-2 in favor of the Warriors.  But the Lady Bears would fight back and several minutes later Safiya Said made a smooth pass from the midfield to find Katelyn Hardwick who took a shot that hit the post but found the net making the score even at 2 for each side.

Later in the half, a penalty was called in the box against the Lady Bears.  The Warriors player lined up for her penalty kick and the shot was wide to the right.  The score remained tied.  The Lady Bears continued to take shots, and make runs with the ball in an effort to put the game away, but could not find the back of the net.  The home team took a total of 19 shots across 4 different players over the course of the game, with the Warriors taking only 10.  Olivia Barfield delivered a strong performance making 5 saves on the night.

The Lady Bears play at Denmark High School on Tuesday, February 9th at 6 pm.

Go Bears!
