Cambridge Wrestling Dominates Sectional Tournament; Eleven Wrestlers Qualify for State Championships

It was a great weekend to be a Bear! The Cambridge Wrestling Bears showed up BIG at the GHSA Traditional Wrestling Sectionals hosted by Alexander High School on February 7-8. Cambridge dominated the tournament with 11 Bears qualifying to attend the GHSA Traditional Wrestling State Championships February 13-15 in Macon.

After 2-days of tough competition the Bears headed back to snowy Milton Saturday evening with five 1st-place, four 2nd-place, one 4th-place and one 7^th-place State contenders. On the road to State are: Cullen Kane (106 lbs.), Ben Werth (120 lbs.), Kyle Romano (138 lbs.), Nicholas Barton (145 lbs.), Kalem Kozma (152 lbs.), Brendan Boyd (160 lbs.), Evan Kurtz (170 lbs.), Gavin Kane (180 lbs.), Mike Hudson (195 lbs.), Connor McHugh (220 lbs.), Julian Petty (285 lbs.).

The final matches were action packed. Cullen Kane gave a great back and forth battle against Pope's wrestler and fell by 1-point while his brother Gavin Kane got in some practice time on the mat with the Richmond Hills wrestler who performed a cart wheel for the crowd before falling to the nationally ranked Kane in the second period 18-3. Two more Bears dashing the hopes of wrestlers from rival Pope High School were Evan Kurtz pinning a Pope wrestler with his "Kurtz Cradle" in the second period and Nicholas Barton with an 8-7 Decision against Pope. Kyle Romano picked up his first-place title with a 13-3 Major Decision over Alexander and Connor McHugh scored his second win in as many weeks against the tough Dunwoody 220-pound senior to take the first-place title with a 7-2 Decision.
