Cambridge Wrestling Takes 1st at Traditional Region; Send 12 Wrestlers to Sectionals

The Cambridge Wrestling Bears seized first place at the Region 7 (6A) Traditionals they hosted on Saturday, February 1.  After settling for second to Pope High School in the Regional Duals in January, the Bears ended the day 12 points ahead of the rival that won the Team Dual Wrestling State Championship just two weeks ago.

The final round started with Cambridge holding a tenuous 4-point lead over the defending state duals champ Pope.  Pope started off strong with several lightweight wins including over Cullen Kane and Ben Werth.  The tide started to turn when Sebastian Shered beat Pope's returning state runner-up.  Then Kyle Romano got a pin, followed by a dramatic win by Nicholas Barton with a last second takedown.  In the background Cambridge picked up team points with wins by Mason Truncale, Miki Baran, and Kalem Kozma.  Cambridge was down by 11 when Evan Kurtz toed the line.  However, 6 straight wins sealed the championship including pins by Kurtz, Gavin Kane, and Julian Petty, and gutty decisions by Mike Hudson 1-0 and Connor McHugh 2-0.  It was a dramatic finish that wasn't decided until Petty got his pin.

Twelve Bears qualified to move on to Sectionals hosted by Alexander High School on February 7 & 8 to battle for a chance to wrestle at the GHSA Traditional Wrestling State Championships in Macon, February 13-15.  Moving to Sectionals are:
