Cambridge Wrestling Medals at State Duals, Saturday, Jan. 18th

The Cambridge Wrestling Bears medal for the first time ever in the Georgia High School Association State Duals in Macon Georgia, Thursday-Saturday, Jan. 16-18th.  The State Duals are team-based, unlike Traditional State which is based upon an individual wrestler's abilities compared to other wrestlers in his weight class.  The Bears returned home on Saturday night with the 4th Place Cup and wrestler medals after the schools second visit to the State Duals.

Cambridge entered the State Duals as the number 5 seed and faced Lanier High School, the Region 8 Champions, in the first round on Thursday.  Cambridge gave up points in only 4 of its 14 bouts and progressed to the quarter finals with a 57-24 win over the Region 8 Champs.

The Cambridge Bears returned to the Macon Centreplex on Friday morning ready to wrestle the number 4 seed Alexander High School in the quarterfinal round of the State Duals.  Wrestling started at the 182-weight class and after 8 bouts Cambridge had given up only 8 points and, at the end of the match, Cambridge moved to the semifinals with a 43-28 win over Alexander.

Georgia Grappler predicted fireworks when Cambridge met Richmond Hill High School in the semifinal round and they were not wrong.  Richmond Hill came on strong winning the first 4 bouts of the match.  The Bears wrestled strong ending with pins from Evan Kurtz and Gavin Kane but ultimately had to move on to the consolation semifinals with a 43-21 loss to Richmond Hill.

The Bears were back on track on Saturday morning when they faced Brunswick High School for a chance to move to the consolation finals!  The two teams battled back and forth in what was likely the most exciting match of the weekend.  Cambridge wrestlers Kyle Romano, Gavin Kane and Connor McHugh scored big for the Bears with pins and Cullen Kane and Nicholas Barton helped to push the Bears on to victory with majors.  The Cambridge Wrestling Bears moved on to the Consolation finals with a 41-24 win over Brunswick.

For the third time this season the Bears faced the team that Georgia Grappler predicted would be the 6A State Champions, Creekview High School.  The match was a close one with pin points by Cullen Kane, Kyle Romano, Gavin Kane and Evan Kurtz but in the end, Cambridge fell short by 5 points with a 30-35 loss to Creekview.

Cambridge will host the 6A Regional Traditional Tournament on January 31 and February 1 where individual wrestlers will seek qualification to move to Sectionals and then back to Macon for the GHSA Traditional Wrestling State Championships, February 13-15, 2020.  If you can't attend in person you can watch via Facebook Live streaming via the team's Facebook page.
