Cambridge Wrestlers Medal at State; Gavin Kane Wins 3rd Straight State Championship

Cambridge Wrestlers Medal at State; Gavin Kane Wins 3rd Straight State Championship

Eight Cambridge Wrestlers made the trip back to Macon Feb. 15-16th to participate in the 2019 GHSA Traditional Wrestling State Championships.  To qualify each wrestler had to advance in Regional and Sectional tournaments held in Milton and Valdosta.

For four days each Bear wrestled through their weight bracket to get to the top six places and earn a medal and chance to stand on the podium in front of their peers, family and friends.

Gavin Kane pinned the formerly 40-0 wrestler from Richmond Hill in the 2nd period and walked away from the weekend with his third Georgia State Championship title in a row.  Gavin, a junior at Cambridge High School, recently committed to wrestle at the collegiate level at the University of North Carolina in 2021.

Sophomore wrestler Kyle Romano, with an impressive 56 wins this season gave Dalton senior and 3-time state champion a run for his money in the 132lb weight class.  Kyle fought hard all three periods and finished with a final score of 12-4 and comes home with a 2nd place State Championship medal for Cambridge.

Another sophomore wrestler Connor McHugh, had a huge gut match against a senior from Centennial, forcing a lock hands in the 2nd period and successfully riding in the 3rd period for a 1-0 victory and 5th place Championship medal.

Sophomore Evan Kurtz returns to Cambridge after his second trip to the state championships with a 6th place Championship medal.  Evan was up on a Richmond Hill wrestler in the second period before a reversal and 8-5 loss in the third period.

Cambridge wrestlers Ben Werth, Nicholas Barton, Nick Owens and Mike Hudson all notched a victory during the 4-day event, a monumental accomplishment for each of them personally and for their team.  Because of their efforts Cambridge High School finished in 8th place out of the 42 teams participating.  It's a wrap for the season but we will anxiously await the return of the Cambridge beastly Bears in Fall 2019!
