Cambridge Swim/Dive Team Girls Win Campbell-Marietta Invite, Boys Take 2nd, Saturday, Jan. 8th

On Saturday, January 8th, 2022, Cambridge traveled to Cobb Aquatic Center to participate in the Campbell-Marietta Invite. The meet hosted 10 teams total. The girls took it down to the last event of the night and won the final relay to win the meet by 3.5 points. The boys very solidly took second place, falling only to Campbell.

In the first event of the day, the boys A-medley relay (Michael O'Connor, Oleg Kolesnikov, Jack O'Connor, Gavin Grann) took second place with a time of 1:43.30. The B-relay (Dylan Brousseau, Yan Berezitsky, Gavin Schoeling, Matthew Harper) took fifth place overall.

For the girls, the race came down to the last leg of the relay. The girls were tied up with Campbell's A-relay until the end of the butterfly leg when Claire Kerber pulled the team ahead and Jennifer Griner sealed the deal and won by half a body length with the freestyle leg. The backstroke leg was completed by Kate Kerber and the breaststroke leg was completed by Caroline Gaines. Their time was 1:54.05. The B-relay (Olivia Skinner, Jamie Walsh, Camille Brown, Abby Harber) took care of business and won their heat and took fourth place overall, beating three other A-relay squads and being the highest finishing B-relay team.

In the boys 200-freestyle, Jack O'Connor won the whole event with a season best time of 2:00.64. Gavin Grann won his event and it earned him fifth place overall. Gavin Schoeling took fifth in his heat and sixth place overall, and Yan Berezitsky took sixth in his heat and seventh overall. Berezitsky swam a new best time.

For the girls, they made a solid statement in their event. Claire Kerber claimed the win, allowing the Bears to do a sweep of the boys and girls event. Paige Jaeger swam a new best time and took third overall. Olivia Skinner took fourth overall.

In the 200-individual medley, Alex O'Connor took third place, Zach Andersen took fourth with a new best time, Dylan Brousseau took fifth, Matthew Harper took seventh, and Elijah Edison took first in his heat and eighth overall.

For the girls, the sweep continued! Kate Kerber claimed the win, followed immediately by teammate Jennifer Griner and then, with an amazing last push, Jamie Walsh stole third by out-touching the girl next to her! Great race for the girls' team!

In the 50-freestyle, Aaron Grann was the top finisher with a second place heat win and a ninth place overall placement, also finishing with a new best time. Ryan Robertson took first in his heat with a new best time and 24th place overall. Raj Malik took first in his heat with a new best time and 38th place overall.

In the girls event, Sydney Forbes was the top finisher for the Bears with a fourth place finish and personal best individual time, just off the state qualifying time. Abby Harber took sixth place. Taylor Minnich took sixth in her heat and 24th place overall. Abigail Marzullo took sixth in her heat and 51st overall.

For the diving event, the girls had some great competition from the surrounding schools. Brooklyn Petit was the top finisher for the Bears. Petit took third place overall, followed immediately by Emilija Ragaine in fourth, Hana El-Gazairly in fifth, Julia Versluis in seventh, Addy Wood in eighth, and Lilah Versluis in 10th.

In the boys 100-butterfly, Jack O'Connor took fourth in his heat and fifth place overall. Gavin Schoeling took fifth in the heat and sixth overall. Matthew Harper took seventh in his heat and eighth overall.

In the girls event, Claire Kerber claimed her second individual event victory. Kerber easily sailed into first, four-second ahead of the second place finisher. Camille Brown took fourth. Ana-Clare Grann took second in her heat and 12th overall.

In the boys 100-freestyle, Gavin Grann swam a new personal best time to take third overall. Michael O'Connor took fourth, Oleg Kolesnikov took seventh, and Zach Andersent took ninth.

For the girls, freshman Jennifer Griner claimed the overall win in the event! Sydney Forbes took third place. Abby Harber won her heat and claimed fifth place overall and Paige Jaeger took sixth.

In the 500-freestyle, Dylan Brousseau took third overall with a new best time.

In the girls event, once again the Bears took a sweep! Caroline Gaines finished well ahead of the pack to claim the win. Jamie Walsh sprinted for the finish and claimed the second place finish.

In the boys 200-freestyle relay, the A-relay (Alex O'Connor, Oleg Kolesnikov, Aaron Grann, Zach Andersen) took second place. The B-relay (Matthew Harper, Gavin Schoeling, Elijah Edison, Ryan Robertson) took first in their heat and claimed eighth place overall.

For the girls, the A-relay (Paige Jaeger, Abby Harber, Sydney Forbes, Camille Brown) took fourth.

In the boys 100-backstroke, Michael O'Connor claimed the win, followed closely by brother Alex O'Connor in third. Ryan Robertson swam a new best time and took third in his heat and seventh overall. Elijah Edison also swam a new best time and took fourth in his heat and ninth overall. Raj Malik took sixth place in his heat and 11th place overall.

In the girls event, Kate Kerber took second place and Olivia Skinner took fourth place, with a new best time and 1/100th off the state qualifying time. Ana-Clare Grann took second in her heat and ninth overall.

In the 100-breaststroke, Oleg Kolesnikov was side-by-side with the Campbell opponent and in the second half managed to pull ahead and finish 1.5-second ahead to claim the win. Aaron Grann swam a new best time and took third overall, Yan Berezitsky also swam a new best time and took fourth.

In the girls event, Caroline Gaines swam an incredibly close race and just fell short at the end to claim second place. Camille Brown took sixth. Taylor Minnich took second in her heat and ninth overall. Abigail Marzullo took second in her heat and 16th overall.

In the final event of the night for the boys, the 400-freestyle A-relay (Gavin Grann, Alex O'Connor, Jack O'Connor, Michael O'Connor) took second overall in a close race to the end with a time of 3:31.41. The B-relay (Zach Andersen, Aaron Grann, Dylan Brousseau, Yan Berezitsky) took fourth.

The girls final score was coming down to the final event. The girls team was trailing going into the event and they needed the points from both relay teams to close the gap. Kate Kerber took the first leg and pulled ahead, Caroline Gaines maintained the separation, Claire Kerber lengthened the lead, and Jennifer Griner polished off the win. The girls finished with a time of 3:45.44, which was over 11-second before the second place team touched the wall. The B-relay also understood what they needed to do. The relay team (Paige Jaeger, Jamie Walsh, Olivia Skinner, Sydney Forbes) easily won their heat and claimed third place overall! The wins by both relay teams got the Bears to edge out the Spartans by 3.5 points and win the meet. Very exciting end to the evening!

The Bears will travel to Wesleyan on Thursday, Jan. 13th to take on Wesleyan and Lovett. The meet begins at 5 PM. The Bears will then get a weekend off before traveling to Westminster for their final competition of the regular season at Metro Championships on the 21st and 22nd. After that, the Bears have two weeks of final preparation before traveling to Georgia Tech for the state championships!
