Cambridge Locks in More State Qualifiers at Madeleine Jude Brown Meet of Champions

On Friday and Saturday, Dec. 14th & 15th, the Bears traveled to Georgia Tech to compete in the 12th annual Madeleine Jude Brown Meet of Champions, hosted my Marist. Girls' team finished in 7th out of 26 teams and the boys' team finished 12th out of 22 teams.

Diving

The divers competed on Friday afternoon and evening and shared boards with some of the best divers in the state. Maddox Riddick, Cambridge's only male diver in the competition, made it through the first round of cuts which allowed him to finish his full 11-dive routine. Without any failed dives, Riddick was able to show a lot of improvement and took risks on a number of very challenging dives. Riddick finished 12th out of 18 divers. For the girls' side, Kate McKay, Margeaux Messier, Haley Copeland and Noor El-Gazairly competed for the Bears. After the first round of cuts after 5 dives, Kate McKay and Haley Copeland made it through in the top 16. After the first round, McKay was in 8th place and Copeland was in 10th place. After the divers were cut to 10 divers following the 8th round, neither McKay nor Copeland made it through. McKay finished in 13th place, Copeland in 15th place, El-Gazairly in 25th and Messier in 33rd out of 42 divers. All four of the girls have already qualified for state but it was great opportunity for them to practice on the boards they will compete on again at the state meet in February. The talent displayed at the meet was incredible, but most of the top scorers were from private schools that the Bears will not have to compete against at the state meet. With only a small number of divers from 6A and 7A schools making it into the top 10, the Bears were among good company and show they can compete with the best in the state regardless of region conference.

Swimming

The swimmers made their way to the very same deck the following morning. Competition began at 11:00 AM and completed at 5:00 PM. Very long meets are challenging for even the best of swimmers and this challenged the endurance, concentration and mental toughness of all athletes on deck.
