Cambridge Divers Qualify for State at Lambert Meet

Cambridge Divers Qualify for State at Lambert Meet

On Thursday evening, December 10th, three Cambridge divers headed to the Cumming Aquatic Center to dive against Lambert for a small dual meet to get some practice before heading to Emory next weekend.

Completing 11 dives, second-year diver Simon Finlayson took first and had an incredibly impressive show of his talents. The judges were all very impressed with his dives and even commented that he was one of the best male divers they had seen all season thus far.  Simon looked much more confident on the board and completed dives with much higher levels of difficulty. With a total degree of difficulty at 22.70, Simon finished with a score of 484.60, which is well past his best score last year of 324.64. This will set a new school record and will put him in a great position going into the state meet. Simon will look to improve his technique in the upcoming meets, especially at Emory and Metros. Both meets are cut meets, which means Simon will have to qualify after his fifth dive, and then again after his eighth dive to be able to finish all eleven dives.

Also completing 11 dives on Thursday was Maddie Chaloux. Maddie is an incredibly talented member of the state qualifying cheer program and translates those skills beautifully into her dives. The judges on Thursday also commented on how much they loved watching Maddie dive and that her technique and lines were so beautiful to watch. The judges commented that her talent is definitely college-level competitive material. Also qualifying for state, Maddie's degree of difficulty was 19.80 and her overall score was 427.30, which is also passing her best score from last year of 350.55. Her score will set a new school record and will also put her in a great position going into the State Meet in February. The highlight of the evening was Maddie being awarded a 9 on her inward dive with one somersault in tuck position. Maddie is definitely a diver to watch this season as she will only get better and is looked to be a top finisher at state. She will also look to qualify to complete all of her dives at Emory and Metros, hosted at Westminster.

Haley Copeland, new to diving this year, also had a great showing. Haley continues to improve every week she competes and even successfully completed her back dives, which is incredibly challenging and something even experienced divers have difficulty doing. Haley completed six dives on Thursday and will look to compete in her first 11-dive meet on Saturday at Emory. With some more competitive experience, Haley is going to become an incredibly strong diver for Cambridge and we look forward to seeing her progress.

This weekend, Saturday December 19th, all five Cambridge divers will compete and hopefully qualify for the final round to score important points for the team. Come and see the Cambridge swimmers and divers at Emory this weekend!

If you want to see some amazing diving in a closer and smaller environment, come to Cumming Aquatic Center on Saturday, January 2nd, where our five divers and some of the best divers in North Georgia will compete in the Holiday Classic.
