Bears Boys Soccer Opens Season with Draw Against North Atlanta, Tuesday, Feb. 2nd

Bears draw 1:1 in first match of the season, Tuesday, Feb. 2nd, 2021:

On a chilly and breezy evening at Cambridge stadium the Bears pulled out a tie with the Warriors of North Atlanta High School. In a match evenly played in the first half ending at 0:0, the energized Bears back four of Clark, Bourne, Highlander and Guertin hung tight and were well composed on defense. Excellent goalkeeping and distribution out of the back were key from Daniel Bojcic in the first half as well.

In the 21st minute starting Sophomore Carson Cassady made a darting run into the box with the ball at his feet. Cassady was tackled hard by a Warriors defender and went down hard on his shoulder wreathing in pain. After the match it was determined Cassady had broken his collar bone - a devastating (potential season-ending) injury for the Bears attack.

The second half once again saw the Bears gain possession advantage through senior mid-fielders Erik Holmen and Jeffrey Rael however with 20 minutes left to play the Warriors found a gap in the Bears' defense and their striker was taken down in the box by Highlander. This goal seemed to wake up the Bears attack with multiple runs being made down the flanks by junior Haris Osmanbasic and senior Carter Johnson. 5 minutes after the North Atlanta goal Osmanbasic made a darting move from the right-hand side and was chopped down in the penalty box. Erik Holmen calmly stepped up to take the penalty and struck ball into the net. Game tied 1:1!

The Bears continued their relentless attack on goal with Osmanbasic narrowly missing the lower left corner of the frame with a powerful left-footed strike and then almost scoring directly off a corner-kick with 5 minutes remaining. Christian Gomez was solid between the pipes in the 2nd half eliminating any Warrior dreams of victory.

The match ended in a well fought 1:1 draw leaving the Bears with lots of optimism for upcoming matches.

Go Bears!
