Cambridge Boys Soccer Claws Back in Goalapalooza Draw vs Etowah, Tuesday, February 11

MILTON, Ga. – After being held to just one goal over its first 3 matches, Tuesday's match against Etowah offered a cornucopia of Cambridge goals as the Bears clawed back from deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 to manage a 4-4 draw with Etowah at CHS Stadium on Tuesday, February 11th.

On the opening whistle Cambridge immediately pushed forward on the attack creating multiple dangerous changes including Carter Johnson's (2021) cross to Reece Degen (2020) in the box, but his shot just sailed over the crossbar in the 2nd minute. However, the Bears found themselves down 2-0 to Etowah after the first 18 minutes, as the Eagles were able to spring an open runner on a longball for a 1-0 lead, and then a short time later, during a 30 second period where the offsides rule was randomly suspended, an Etowah attacker was able to punch in a rebounded shot from 1 yard out for the 2nd goal.

Encouragingly, the Bears stepped up their game with some individual brilliance from Lucas Pegorer (2020) who beat 2 defenders and unleashed an absolute laser from 23 yards out to the top left corner of the goal to make it 2-1 at 29 minutes. Moments later, after being fouled outside the box, Degen found some magic of his own with a 22-yard missile into the top right corner off the resulting free kick to make it 2-2. The Bears were close to taking the lead into half time with Pegorer's long run and shot ending up just inches wide after beating the Etowah keeper.

The start of the 2nd half mirrored the first stanza as the Bears went aggressively on the attack. Degen's pass to an unmarked Johnson in the box was well-saved by the Eagles keeper. Etowah struck back and took a 3-2 lead in the 49th minute after a Cambridge foul outside of the box setup a free kick from 22 yards that found the back of the net. The Eagles almost doubled their lead with a dangerous shot in the 65th minute but were turned away by Christian Lopez's (2021) acrobatic touch to flip it over the crossbar.  With only 13 minutes remaining the Bears struck back with 2 top class goals. First, Luke Isler's (2020) free kick from 40 yards out found a streaking Johnson who brilliantly headed the ball in to tie the game at 3 apiece. Then Degen went beast mode on a 40-yard run beating multiple defenders before sliding the ball across the box to Pegorer who found the back of the net for the 2nd time on the night with an 18-yard strike with 11 minutes to go, giving the Bears a 4-3 advantage.

However, Etowah was not to be denied as the Eagles immediately responded with some offensive pressure of their own and were awarded a penalty kick in the 73rd minute that tied the game at 4. Cambridge worked hard to find the last-minute winner but were turned away on a last second corner kick in the 80th minute.

The Bears finish their opening 4-game homestand against West Forsyth on Thursday, February 13th at 6:00PM.

Go Bears!
