Cambridge Boys Soccer Advances to Sweet 16 with Win Over Lanier, Wednesday, April 25th

The Bears improved to 16-1 on the season and moved on to the Sweet 16 with a 3-0 result versus a scrappy Lanier Longhorn squad, Wednesday, April 25th.

Supportive Bear fans came dressed for the "White Out" with cowbells, flags, horns and plenty of energy for a first round state playoff match.  After three days of EOC testing, the boys showed signs of being a bit sluggish in an important match which while not their best of the season, still earned them the win and a clean sheet.

Cambridge controlled the ball most of the match having a number of scoring opportunities but could not find the back of the net until the 30 minute mark in the 1st half: John Crawley earned a penalty kick and Ethan Rose stepped up and buried the ball in the back of the net, Cambridge 1 Lanier 0.  As the first half ended, there was activity from end to end but no scores.  Lanier only had one shot on frame during the first half of play compared to multiple shots for Cambridge.

As the second half opened, Cambridge continued to control the pace and possession and Lanier began to chase the match which provided more wide open play and many chances for the Bears.  In the 49th minute, Jarvin Ramirez earned a penalty kick which Reece Degan confidently put in the back of the net, Cambridge 2 Lanier 0.

As the match progressed into the 2nd half, Cambridge had numerous chances in front of the goal with no luck while Lanier pressed and chased the match more. Finally in the 77th minute, Jarvin Ramirez played a long diagonal ball to John Crawley who beat his defender with speed and then juked an over-aggressive goalie before slotting the ball into the far side netting, Cambridge 3 Lanier 0, final score.

With this result, Cambridge earned the right to host a second-round State Playoff match at home, Wednesday May 2nd, against a very formidable , 9th ranked Allatoona (13-4-1), who beat Douglas County 6-2 in the first round play-off game. Kick-off is at 7:30PM.

Come out and cheer-on your Bears to another victory and a trip to the Elite 8.
