Cambridge Varsity Boys Soccer Defeats Pope 5-1; improves to 3-0 in Region play, 8-0 for the Season

Tuesday, March 6, 2018 – Pope High School -  The Bears traveled to Pope High School for their 3rd Region 7 match of the year and earned the result 5-1, pushing their Region 7 record to 3-0 and their season record to 8-0. 

Pope entered its first Region match with a 4-1-1 record, rank #10 in Eurosport and Topdrawer Soccer,  allowing only 3 goals in the 6 matches.  The match opened with back and forth play from each team, as both teams tried to penetrate the others defense for goal scoring opportunities in the final third.  From the 10th minute mark on the Bears took control playing direct as much as possessing the ball for the balance of the match.  At the 31st minute mark Jarvin Ramirez earned a PK and Ethan Rose stepped up and drilled the ball in the back on the net, Cambridge 1 and Pope 0. 

The second goal followed 2 minutes later at the 33rd minute when Jarvin Ramirez found John Barton in front of the net for the 2nd goal, Cambridge 2 and Pope 0.  The third goal of the 1st half came in the 38th minute when John Barton hit John Crawley on a fast break counter.  The first half ended with Cambridge up 3-0.  

The second half opened with some back and forth play, Cambridge had several quality attempts at goal but could not find the back of the net.  Cambridge opened the scoring in the second half, at the 15 minute mark, when Reece Degan found John Crawley in front of the goal after some quality moves on the endline.  The final Cambridge goal came at the 25th minute when Reece Degan took a throw-in from Harrison Fields and moved from left to right just outside the 18 yard box and threaded the ball through several defenders and the goalie.  Cambridge 5 and Pope 0.  Pope finally found the back of the net at the 35th minute mark of the match.
