Cambridge Boys Varsity Soccer Improves to 2-0 in Region Play with Win over Centennial

Cambridge High School – Friday March 2, 2018 -  On a crisp night at Cambridge the Boys Soccer team played with the patience and precision of surgeon as they took on an undefeated Centennial Knights team which man handled the Bears last year at home 6-4.

As the match began the Bears controlled possession and the tempo playing out of the back and dissected the opponents defense, midfield and final third time and time again.  John Crawley split the Knights back line 20 minutes into the match and was tackled (American Football style) from behind just outside the box, which earned the opposing player a straight red card.  Up a man Cambridge continued its possession style of play and scored 4 minutes later when Ben Barfield slotted a ball, through and behind the Knights' back line, to Reece Degan who juked the goalie and passed the ball into the back of the net.  Cambridge 1 and Centennial 0.  At the 38th minute mark Ethan Rose placed a ball over the top on to Omar Dhrif's foot who took a touch and promptly slotted the ball past the goalie for a 2-0 Cambridge advantage.

The second half opened with Cambridge controlling the ball and Centennial chasing the game which provided a number of scoring opportunities for Cambridge, the Bears finally found the back of the net, in the 20th minute, when John Crawley made a run up the right side and slotted the ball across the mouth of the goal to a streaking Omar Dhrif who found the back of the net for his second goal of the match.  Cambridge earned the 3-0 result which pushed their Region record to 2-0 and their season record to 7-0.

The Bears earned their first clean sheet of the year with this result, holding to Centennial to only 1 quality shot on goal for the match.  The defense, Nic Sides, Ethan Rose, Jack Tindle, Sid Marupudi, Harry Fields, Trey Rielly and Ben Barfield, played very well as a unit pressuring, covering and recovering for each other throughout the match, well played boys!

Next up for the Bears is a trip to Pope High School on Tuesday March 6th at 7:55PM.  Pope leads the series against Cambridge 2-1 and is currently 4-1-1 this season.  This is a Region Match, enough said, against a tough opponent.  Come out and support your team!

Go Bears!
