Boys Varsity Soccer Falls to Gainesville 2-1 in State Tournament

Boys Varsity Soccer ended their season with a narrow loss in the first round of the State playoffs, to the fourth in State ranked Gainesville team, Wednesday, April 29th.

Gainesville was expected to win big so it was an exciting game when the Bears' John Shayne took the corner kick and passed to Zack Midulla who scored.  The Bears held the 1-0 lead through the entire first half and well in to the second half. The Cambridge team showed some outstanding defense by the line of seniors,  Avery SpauldingClay HammerJohn Barnabei and Zack Midulla who coordinated their efforts with dovetail efficiency.

Rain only added to the Bears struggle to own the ball in the midfield against the dominant Gainesville team.  With some shots on goal by Shayne that missed the net by mere inches, the Bears offense was unable to score again.  A debated referee call favored the Gainesville team with a goal. The tired Bears held the game close and finished their first-ever State playoff appearance with a very respectable effort in the 2-1 loss.

When asked to sum up the season and the final game Head Coach Bryan Wallace expressed an extreme sense of disappointment in losing a game they led for the majority of time and felt they could have won.  Nonetheless, Wallace was extremely proud of his team this year for the winning record, their improved level of play and their invaluable, unselfish teamwork.  He restated his disappointment in the final loss but emphasized how pleased he was with the way his team competed all season against the toughest of teams.

Boys soccer finished 11-5-1 overall and fourth in the very tough AAAAA, 14 team Region 7.

Congratulations Bears on a successful season!

Best of luck to the graduating seniors who will be playing in college:  Garrett Shan, Ohio, and Clay Hammer, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, AZ.
