Cambridge Boys Varsity Soccer Defeat North Atlanta, Fall to Riverwood

Friday, March 27, Cambridge Varsity Soccer played an intense, non-stop action game against tough Region 7 opponent Riverwood, who is 12-0.

Exhausted Cambridge players gave it their all, but lost 2-1 against the sixth in state ranked team.

Clearly the player who exceptionally contributed to holding the usually high-scoring Riverwood team to only 2 goals was Man of the Match, goalie Zack Evens.  Evens made some spectacular diving, reaching stops and impressively punched several goal shots to render them ineffective, all of which were followed up by huge cheers from the crowd.

Monday, March 30, Bears Varsity soccer prevailed in a 3-0 win over region opponent North Atlanta H.S.

Striker Brett Stephens gave the Bears a lead with his first goal. The Warriors were very quick to the ball and disrupted many of the Bears' passes but midfielder Diego Zarate with speed and determination, maneuvered through the black jerseys to set up the second goal by the ever-ready Stephens.

The final Bears' goal was a rip in by defender Clay Hammer.  North Atlanta ramped up their level of play and as the game became more physically rough, Bears' defense took some heat.  Senior defender John Barnabei, was relentless in his effort to keep the ball away from his goal and despite injuries, he bounced back up and continued his high level of play to help keep North Atlanta scoreless.

Goalie Zack Evens blocked a North Atlanta penalty kick. After a red card issued to the goalie, the Warriors had to play one player short, but that only increased their resolve and they never gave up trying to score.  Even with a 3 point lead as the clock wound down, the Bears never let up.  Midfielder Matthew Lakatos, played full-out to help hold the Warriors scoreless. Lakatos fought for every ball, either by elevating to win a header or hustling to the ball.

Man of the Match recognition goes to John Barnabei for his unabated determination, excellent play and toughness in the game.  Man of the Match recognition also goes to Matt Lakatos for his focus on getting the ball, his toughness and never-quit efforts, and commitment to the team.  After suffering a severe fall and concussion, as the ambulance was on its way, Matt asked to be put back in the game.

Coach Wallace was pleased with the win. The Bears are now 8-3-1 overall and 4-1 in their region.

Final regular season games are Wed. April 1 against Central Forsyth and Friday, April 3 at 5:30pm vs. Eagles Landing.

Both games are at home.

Go Bears!
