Bears Varsity Boys Soccer Opens Season with Win over Wesleyan

The Boys' Varsity soccer season got underway Friday night, Feb. 13th against Wesleyan.

Cambridge held Wesleyan scoreless for the first 20 minutes of the game.  Energy was on the Bears' side with a few close shots on goal by Alex Mueller and some solid defense and passing by Zack Midulla and Clay Hammer to keep Wesleyan scoreless.  As the Wesleyan team gained momentum they were first on the board but with 4 minutes to the half, Brett Stephens skillfully passed to sophomore Ryan Pratt who kicked it in for a goal.  An uncontested shot by Carson Densmore made the score 2-1 Cambridge at halftime.

Some welcome speed and hustle by impressive Cambridge athlete, JD White, and a Cambridge HS newcomer from the Seattle area, Griffin Boone joined with returning Varsity standouts John Barnabei and Diego Zarate to contribute to the win.  The Wesleyan goalie blocked a great shot by #14, Matthew Lakatos, but Brett Stephens managed to kick one by him.  A debatable goal against Cambridge earned upset goalie, Zack Evens, a yellow card.  Wesleyan ramped up the pressure plays with under a minute to go, but goalie John Shayne made 2 outstanding saves ensuring Cambridge finished with a 3-2 win.

Head Coach Bryan Wallace had mixed thoughts on the night saying, "The effort and ideas were there but the boys are still learning things under a new system of play." He summarized commenting that he overall likes what he sees what his players are capable of, they just need to clean up little things here and there.  He is excited about the depth of quality players, and doesn't feel like he loses team integrity with substitutions.

Next game is Friday, Feb. 20 at home vs. Eagle's Landing H.S. from McDonough, GA.

Go Bears!
