Bears Varsity Men's Soccer Splits with Osborne, Sprayberry

Bears vs. Osborne (April 23)

Cambridge Varsity Soccer beat Osborne 3-0 in the final game of the season Wednesday, April 23rd.

After a lackluster first half it was 0-0.   In the second period the Bears came out armed with a fresh, exciting level of intensity, showing everyone they were determined to win.  Brett Stephens scored first on a penalty kick.

The intensity continued for the rest of the game. Departing senior Nick Norris, drove in a kick to score the second goal.  The very determined defensive line consisting of Zach Midulla, Avery Spaulding, Clay Hammer and the reliable, John Barnabei held off the increasingly aggressive Osborne offense with some heavy duty pressure.

Midulla as always, worked his unbelievable skill to take the ball away from any red jersey possible. Spaulding made some phenomenal plays at full running speed to give Bears back possession.  Hammer repeatedly made some impressive passes including several to Mitchell Stephens, who controlled the ball with his deep talent to take it back downfield.  Goalie Zack Evens made some great laid out, reaching saves .

The intensity and teamwork never let up. Brett Stephens scored again with 10 minutes left in the game.  Osborne was given 6 yellow cards in the second half as they became increasingly frustrated. Diego Zarate, who was stymied by Sprayberry, played a solid game.

Head Coach Brian Wallace said he was very proud of how the team played in the second half.  It was representative of the potential and ability the team has built this year.   It was unfortunate to just miss a playoff slot by a minor rule book technicality.

Man of the Match, Nick Norris, who was out for part of the season due to injury, finished the season with a standout game.  Congratulations Nick!

Bears vs. Sprayberry (April 21)

The Bears lost this critical game to Sprayberry 2-1 on Monday, April 21st.

Striker,  Julien Ekeholm, used everything in his tank to out run and out hustle the Sprayberry team.  Brett Stephens and several others Bears had shots that hit the goal structure only to be deflected out. Several attempts were blocked by an effective Sprayberry goalie.

Outstanding defense and playmaking by Zack Midulla earned him the Man of the Match title.  Congratulations Zack!

Congratulations to Men's Varsity Soccer on a winning season.  (11-7 Overall ... 6-4 Region)
