Cambridge Men's Soccer Splits with Creekview, Wesleyan

Bears vs. Creekview (April 18)

Creekview fell to Cambridge 2-1 after 2 overtime periods and the free kicks sequence.  Coach Wallace who was pleased about the win against a region opponent, was doubly excited about how well his team played from start to finish.  He credited all players for putting forth a solid all-around team effort. He felt it was the best game they've played all season which is so important going in to the last few games.

With 2 region games remaining, Coach Wallace feels the team is poised to win against Osborne and Sprayberry if they want it badly enough, as they demonstrated against the 8-2 Creekview.

Despite playing in a downpour the entire game,  fans under their umbrellas cheered their team. Julien Ekeholm never let up, challenging to get the ball using his speed even on the slippery turf.  Alex Mueller, Garrett Shan and Avery Spaulding were not intimidated by the very physical playing Creekview team. Although there were not a lot of opportunities set up for goal shots, the Stephens brothers, Mitchell and Brett, masterfully maneuvered to control the ball with their always-impressive ball handling skills.   Mitchell sent a corner kick sailing in to the crowd and Brett zeroed in on it knocking it in to score in the first half.

Some spot on passing from Clay Hammer to Brett Stephens came close but no more goals were scored.  First half goalie John Shayne and his defense held impenetrable keeping Creekview scoreless the entire first half.   Creekview only scored near the very end of the game to send it into overtime.

Man of the Match, Zack Midulla, whose great hustle, anticipation skills, and overall awesome defensive skills was a key ingredient to the win.  He was always in the right spot at the right time to send the ball back in to Creekview territory.

Yellow cards were issued to Shan and Ekeholm, debatably, against the equally aggressive Creekview players. Man of the Match, Midulla, also kicked in the winning free kick to end an exciting game. Bears are 5-3 in region games. 10-6 overall.

Bears vs. Wesleyan (April 17)

Man of the Match 11th grader, John Barnabei, who has been steady, reliable and easy to take for granted all season because he just gets the job done without fanfare, played another stellar game against a strong Wesleyan team.

His consistent defense is a critical part of the Bears defense. The Bears lost 3-1, as their ability to execute strategy weakened in the second half.   The only goal was late in game by Brett Stephens.

Final games are April 21 vs. Sprayberry and April 23 vs. Osborne..both games at Cambridge.

GO Bears!
