CHS Boy's & Girl's Soccer Tryout Information

CHS Boy's & Girl's Soccer Tryout Information

Q:  When are tryouts and how will they work?

A:  The first day of tryouts will be Tuesday 1/22.  Athletes should plan to be on the main stadium field ready to begin by 4.  Tryouts will be Tuesday - Friday from 4-6.

Q:  What does my son or daughter need to participate in tryouts?

A:  Every athlete that wants to participate in tryouts must have a copy of a current physical, a Fulton County athletic consent form, a player info sheet, and proof of insurance.  The required documents are attached to this e-mail, or the student can see any coach for these forms.

It should be noted that players MUST have insurance in order to participate in interscholastic sports. If your player does not have health insurance, you can purchase low-cost accident insurance through Fulton County Schools. Please see a guidance counselor for the application form.

Also, physical forms are good for one year from the date the physician signs the clearance to participate. The season runs until roughly the end of April so be sure the players physical does not expire before this.

Q:  What equipment should my player bring to tryouts?

A:  Each player should bring both running shoes and soccer cleats.  Players should check the weather in advance and be sure they dress appropriately.  Players should also bring water or sports drinks.  Please be aware that NO PLAYER WILL BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN TRYOUTS WITHOUT SHIN GUARDS.

Q:  What if my son or daughter played another sport and has already submitted these documents?

A:  If your player participated in a fall sport, he/she will still need to submit these forms to us for soccer. If you did not keep a copy, please contact the fall sport coach. It is your responsibility to get the forms to us.

Q:  How do I know if my son or daughter is eligible according to GHSA to play soccer?

A:  All freshmen are automatically eligible if they began the school year at Cambridge.   Anyone who has been zoned for Cambridge, has been at Cambridge since the beginning of the year, and attended Milton or Alpharetta last year is most likely eligible.  Please bring to the coaches' attention any eligibility challenges you believe your child may face so we can begin to work on them now.  We do not control eligibility and must submit all players to GHSA to determine their eligibility.

Q:  How and when will I know if my son or daughter has made the team?

A:  Cuts will be made after the last tryout on Friday and posted on the soccer section of the Cambridge Athletics website by later that evening.  If for some reason we are not able to access the website we will make other arrangements and will inform everyone in advance.

Q:  How many players are you planning on keeping and how will I know if my son or daughter has made JV or Varsity?

A:  The plan for both boys and girls is to have both a JV and Varsity squad composed of 18 and 16 players respectively.  Initial cuts will only indicate whether or not a player will be part of the Cambridge soccer program.  Specific JV and Varsity designations will be made over the next two weeks as coaches have a chance to better evaluate players and positions.

JV and Varsity teams will be somewhat fluid as players may move up and down between teams during the season to maximize playing time and player development.

Q:  How much will it cost to play?

A:  All players will be responsible for a $250 participation fee, per Cambridge Athletic Policy.  This fee will pay for startup costs associated with the program (primarily uniforms).  Additionally, each player will be asked to purchase a "Player Kit" which will include warm-ups, socks, bag, practice shorts, LS practice shirt, SS practice shirt, and beanie.  The price for this will be approximately $200 and all items will belong to the players.

Q:  When is the deadline to provide these forms and who do I give them to?

A:  Completed forms MUST be submitted no later than Friday, January 18, for the student to participate in the first day of tryouts on 1/22. Grades will be available by then to check for academic eligibility. We will not be able to do that at the field, so if players are not cleared by Friday 1/18, there will be a delay between when the forms are turned in and they are cleared to participate. Forms can be turned in at the following places at the front desk at Cambridge in an envelope marked "CHS Soccer".  We are planning on having some parent volunteers at the school this week to collect the forms so it may be possible to drop them off with these parents.  Please see the e-mail for more specific information on this.

Q:  What if my child is currently participating in another sport?

A:  If your child is rostered to a winter sport and that sport's season will last until after January 7, please email us and let us know. We can then sort out your child's tryouts. Per GHSA rules, players cannot tryout or practice with any other HIGH SCHOOL TEAM while they are rostered to another HIGH SCHOOL TEAM. This does not apply to any club teams.
