Varsity Men's Lacrosse Earns Playoff Spot with 8-7 win over Blessed Trinity

In their most evenly matched game to date, Cambridge played exciting lacrosse against a tough opponent in the Blessed Trinity Titans Thursday night April 3rd.  The Bears beat BT in overtime, and the win upped the Bears record to 11-4, and secured a spot in post-season play.

The game was neck and neck throughout, with the Bears holding on to the lead or tied until the 3rd quarter.  Jaime Wilkins was the first to score for Cambridge in the first minute of the game.  Tyler Werth put his shot in the back of the net a scant minute and a half later to give the Bears the 2-0 lead.  BT quickly responded with a goal of their own.  A turnover forced by Chase Darnell late in the 1st quarter set up the Bears next goal through passes to Brendan Fahey and JD White and finally to Werth, who scored his second goal of the night.  BT scored again with under 4 minutes to play in the quarter, bringing the score 3-2 CHS.

The Titans scored in the first 10 seconds of the 2nd quarter.  A few minutes later, a pass picked off and cleared by defenseman Balon Compton set up the goal by JD White, giving the Bears back the lead at 4-3.  BT added another goal to their tally in the final 2 minutes of the half, upping the score to 4-2 CHS at the half.

The Titans started the second half fired up, scoring the next 2 goals and taking the lead 6-4.  A ground ball pick up by Will Britain, who then fed Werth on the inside left, brought the Bears to within 1 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

Cambridge and BT traded goals early in the 4th quarter to give BT the 7-6 advantage.

Cambridge then tied it with 5 minutes left in the game on a top side rip from Wilkins.  Both teams had possessions and a chance to take a lead in an exciting final 5 minutes.  Cambridge stepped out of the box with under 2 minutes in the game, which gave BT their final possession.  Leading scorer #5 from BT got open on a cut just off the crease but goalie Aaron Contreras came up with a huge save.

Cambridge cleared the ball and had a final possession.  A slash call with 20 seconds left put Cambridge man up.  Time expired without a goal but Cambridge's Britain won the man up face off to start overtime.  Cambridge maintained possession and ended with a rip from up top by Wilkins, scoring with 3:02 remaining in OT.

Both goalies played very well but Aaron Contreras for Cambridge stood on his head with 14 saves on the night, including many excellent stops at key times.
