Varsity Boy's Lacrosse Opens Season with 13-0 Win over MLK

The Cambridge Bears men's lacrosse team officially opened its inaugural season with a 13-0 win over the Martin Luther King Jr. High School Lions at Cambridge.

Captains Josh Kania, Jamie Wilkins, Raleigh Cassada and Brendan Fahey led the Bears on the field.  Senior Ryan Callahan handled face offs for Cambridge, dominating a new and relatively inexperienced MLK team.   Callahan and the midfield line won all but a handful of face offs, setting the Bear's offense in motion.  The offense moved the ball well in the opening series, hitting freshman Jamie Wilkins in front of the crease.  Wilkins got off a clean shot, scoring the first goal in Bears' history.  Sophomore Carson Smith added two before the end of the first quarter.  Goalie Aaron Contreras was solid in the cage, shutting out the Lions.

Cambridge continued to dominate the Lions in the first half.  Keys to their domination were a solid defense, ground balls, clears, continuing to win face offs and having Contreras in the cage.  The attack moved the ball well, as the Bears were able to run their offense without much difficulty.  Cambridge led at the half 9-0.

Both teams stepped up their defense in the 3rd quarter, keeping both offenses scoreless.  The Cambridge offense was back fast and furious in the 4th, moving the ball well and doing a good job of finding the open man.  Ground balls and sharp passing enabled a combined attack and midfield line to add 4 more goals to the Bears' total.  Defense remained strong, although Cambridge gave the Lions a few opportunities to score on penalties.  Freshman Croix Martini, in the cage for the entire second half, was able to fend off the Lions, maintaining the shut out.

The men's varsity team is on the road Thursday, February 21, traveling to North Springs.  The game starts at 7:00 pm.
