Cambridge Varsity Boys Basketball Team Scores Big

January 18, 2013 will be marked as the night the Cambridge boys' basketball team earned its first region victory in school history by defeating the Region 7B-AAAAA leading Sprayberry Yellow Jackets 69-68. The night was even more exciting because it was our Bears Feeder Basketball Night, and the gym was packed with future Cambridge Bears and their family members.

Sprayberry got off to a strong start against the Bears, but Cambridge kept hitting shots and matching each Yellow Jacket punch. Cambridge found themselves down by two points at the end of the first quarter, but up by two points at halftime. The Bears came out on fire in the third quarter and kept fighting throughout the fourth quarter. The small lead the Bears had in the fourth quarter evaporated as the Yellow Jackets fought back to take a two point lead late in the fourth quarter; however, Jordan Sloter hit what proved to be the game winning three-point shot to give the Bears the lead at 69-68.

"The entire team played their tails off," Varsity Coach Chip Flemmer happily reported. "I am so proud of how these guys showed resilience to bounce back and win the game!"

Cambridge Athletic Director Matt Lawless was in the crowd for this historic occasion. "The boys basketball team's first win paralleled the story of its season; the team simply refused to quit. Considering the team is composed mostly of underclass men, I think it is strikingly clear that there are big things ahead for Cambridge Basketball. This win will be the first of many."

Jordan Sloter led the Bears with 23 points including 7 three-pointers! Hunter Knocke was on fire from the field and added 20 points. Coach Flemmer: "Great game, Bears!!! This truly was a game that demonstrated, 'One Team, One Heartbeat!' ".
