Varsity Gymnastics Finishes Season 13th in Georgia State Prelim Meet

Varsity Gymnastics Finishes Season 13th in Georgia State Prelim Meet
The Cambridge Gym Bears ended their season on Saturday, April 14th, at the Georgia State Prelim meet, finishing 13th as a team in Georgia.

Despite the team having two of their top gymnasts out of the competition with foot injuries and another unable to compete, the Gym Bears dug deep and delivered strong overall performances on all four events in Saturday's meet.

Starting on the Floor, freshmen Gracie Counsell and Erin Huddle led off the competition with both girls hitting their routines, scoring 8.35 and 8.15 respectively.  Junior Jenna Hart, scoring an 8.85, just missed qualifying for state finals while teammate Annalise Stallworth did make the cut to advance to the finals tying for 12th place overall with an 8.95.

Beam was the Gym Bears next event, and Hart unfortunately broke her foot in warm ups and was out of the competition.  The three remaining Cambridge gymnasts stepped up to the plate and nailed their routines.  All three posted clean tumbling and leap/jump series and stuck landings.  Junior Haley Copeland led off the team with her second beam routine of the year with a steady score of 7.95.  Huddle was up next, scoring a team high 8.025, and was followed by Counsell with an 7.975.

Moving to the Bars, Cambridge struggled to find a replacement for Hart, a top bar worker.  Ellie Hegwood started the rotation for the team with a steady performance scoring a 7.0 and was followed by Huddle with a strong bar set earning an 8.525.  Counsell was up next, and threw a personal best bar routine with a score of 8.0.  Filling in for Hart, Copeland threw her first career high school bar routine to enhance Cambridge's chances to qualify as a team for the state final.

The team ended competition on the Vault.  Huddle landed both her vaults leading the team with an 8.75.  Copeland stuck her vaults as well, scoring 8.15, followed closely by Sophomore Avery Markow with an 8.05.  Counsell, filling in for Hart, threw her first vault of the year and earned an 7.9.
