On Friday, September 29th, Cambridge traveled to Johns Creek in desperate need of a win. The Bears came ready to play and used a strong all-around effort to defeat the Gladiators 27-7. The Bears showed flashes of strong play this year, but the team truly came together for four quarters at Johns Creek.
The game started with the defense. Johns Creek took the ball out of the gate and drove all the way to the Bears 10-yard line. The Bears defense clamped down. Sophomore Gavin Kane intercepted the ball on the next play. The Bears drove the ball the other way and opened up the scoring with a field goal. Hogan Dykes delivered a 44-yard strike to Ridge Polk to give the Bears a 10-0 lead at the half.
Johns Creek's lone touchdown of the game came on a 3-yard run with 7:22 remaining in the third quarter. The score stood at 10-7. The Bears answered immediately with yet another connection of Dykes and Polk for a 30-yard score. Cambridge never looked back, scoring another 10 points in the fourth quarter to win 27-7. "I told the team after the game that it was a total team win," said Bennett. "Offense, Defense, and Special Teams did what they were capable of and played hard".
The Cambridge offense finished with an astounding 411 total yards. Ridge Polk accounted for more than half of this total with 244 yards, 9 receptions, and 3 touchdowns. Polk added on a 33-yard pass to senior wide receiver Christian Lail. One top of this, Polk played 119 snaps, including every play on defense with 4 tackles. The junior wide receiver sits at 2nd in the entire state 697 receiving yards on the year. Matt McCree jumped back into action with 57 yards rushing, and Evan Kuykendall added 47 yards on the ground. The Bears offense recorded no turnovers the entire game.
On defense, the Bears made big plays at the right time. In addition to Kane's interception, the Cambridge defense made a key stop on a fourth down in Bear territory and forced a missed field goal. "We came out a little slow at the beginning and after halftime, but once we adjusted we settled in a played much better" stated Bennett. Will Covington led the team in tackles once again with 9 on the night.
The Bears host Dunwoody this Friday, October 6th. Dunwoody features a strong offense that will use different formations and trick plays. "We prepare the same way each week," said Bennett. "We focus on getting ourselves better and understanding the opponent's tendencies".
The game will kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
