Bears Football Kick Off 2014 Season with Impressive Win over Holy Innocents

Bears Football Kick Off 2014 Season with Impressive Win over Holy Innocents

The Cambridge Bears were back in action against Holy Innocents Friday August 22nd, and great action it was under the lights at Bears Stadium!

The patriotic themed student fans enthusiastically supported their team when early on, quarterback Brian Moore threw to freshman receiver Spencer Gaddis, for a 40 yard touchdown play to score.  Holy Innocents answered with 6 points of their own.  From there, Cambridge silenced their opponent.

Highlight plays in the first quarter included some impressive tackles by linebacker Brock Nielson.  A two point conversion attempt was made to look easy by JD White.

Second quarter, the athleticism and speed of the 2014 Bears players was very apparent.  QB Moore found his magnetic receiver, John Hurst, for completion of a 75 yard touchdown play.  Kicker Clayton Hammer minimized Holy Innocents chances of running it back as GHSA rules automatically put the ball on the 20 yard line for kickoffs into the end zone.  The deceptively mighty nose guard, Will Britain stopped the offense cold in several standout plays.   Defensively, Nathan Kish and Tate Prezzano were more than reliable in making some big plays.  On special teams the aggressive Craig Carter and Garrett Walton were in the face of the opponent down field in a blink.

In addition to his 25 yard rushing touchdown, QB Moore displayed confidence and competence in spreading the ball around to his receivers. Nice catches were made by Gaddis, Hurst, and then a 35 yard pass play by the fast and nimble Hunter Smith, to set up a touchdown by JD White in the 3rd quarter.   PAT by Hammer made the score 35-6.

Defensive Backs Charles Mills and Devin Kane showed their ability to contribute in a big way holding H.I.E.S to 6 points for the rest of the game.

With a final score of 42-6,  Head Coach Craig Bennett encouraged the team to enjoy the excitement of the win, but to assess the strengths and weaknesses of their play.  He emphasized it is important to learn something from every game, win or lose, so the team gets better every week.

Next week the team takes on Chapel Hill in Douglasville Friday August 29th. Game time is 7:30pm.

Congratulations Bears on your first win of the season!
