Cambridge Football Scrimmage vs. Lumpkin County Friday, Aug. 15th 7:30pm

Football season starts Friday, August 15, when Lumpkin County drives down to Bear Country to scrimmage.  The Lumpkin team is AAA from Dahlonega. Bears Head Coach Craig Bennett sees this as a dress rehearsal for the coaches to observe and discover play and player readiness as opposed to playing with a Win/Loss emphasis.  It will give them the video tool to prepare for the season opener next Friday, August. 22 against Holy Innocents.

Bears fans can get excited about up and comers including sophomore running back Kaelyn Byrd, who was a standout on the freshman team last year.  He had some play opportunities on Varsity at the end of the season and was effective.  Now with a year of high school experience under his belt, coaches and fans alike anticipate watching this play maker.

The athletic freshman, Spencer Gaddis, who plays wide receiver will likely get some Varsity playing time as coaches see good development potential for this rising star.

Bears fans can look forward to the return of Junior Trey Wolfe, middle linebacker, and Senior defensive end, Josh Kania.  Both are players to watch for an exciting, make-things-happen season!   Junior Scott Gustafson, a wide receiver, is looking to make an impact on varsity this year with good hands and agility. Fans who watched the winning freshman team last year will be eager to see Will Britton contribute his skills at outside linebacker at the higher level.  Brian Moore will be back as starting quarterback.

Players who likely won't be in the scrimmage but should be fully repaired by season start include 1st Team, All-State punter, Hunter Smith, and WR John Hurst, both recovering from minor hamstring injury.  A big loss for the Bears is junior Eric Cizek who is out for the season due to compound fracture broken arm surgery.

The Bears have 22 seniors, most coming in with 2 years of Varsity playing experience.  It looks to be an exciting, competitive season for Cambridge.  Come on out and preview your 2014-15 Cambridge Bears Varsity Football at home.  Scrimmage time is 7:30pm.
