Bears Fall to Sequoyah 36-11; Next Up is Kell in Region Play-in Game

All the ingredients were in place for a memorable senior recognition night for Marching Band, Cheer and Football, except for the final score. The Bears lost to the Sequoyah Chiefs 36-11.

That's not to say there weren't some stellar efforts by certain players.  Brock Nielson broke through the line with freight train determinaton for a 17 yard rush.  He added 2 more rushing gains to an 18 yard quarterback keeper by Brian Moore. A 6 yard pass from Moore to John Hurst set up a field goal by Clayton Hammer, making it 7-3.

Bears defense had some leaks in it allowing 33 total points in the first half but defenders Eric Cizek and Garrett Walton were all over the Chiefs to make some impressive tackles.  The Bears added one more touchdown to their score with a pass from Moore to Hunter Smith for 40 yd gain.  Then JD White maneuvered the last 2 yards in to the end zone.  Moore ran it in for the extra 2 points.

Sequoyah's secondary defenders were solid which really made it challenging for Moore to find a Bear receiver.  Coverage was like a blanket.  Smith was able to impressively pull in a 10 yard pass at the sideline and Hurst, likewise made a nice sideline catch for 11 yards to keep hopes alive.  At Halftime the score was Sequoyah 33, Bears 11.

The Second half belonged to Trey Wolfe who tackled with absolute all-out effort. His standout effectiveness included a sack and helped hold the Chiefs to only 3 points for the rest of game.

Coach Craig Bennett, unhappy with the loss to Sequoyah, felt the regular season on one hand was extremely successful because they "closed the gap" compared to last year.  But with some success comes higher expectations and because the Bears were so close in all the contests they lost this year, Coach Bennett believed they could have finished with a better win record.

Next Friday, Nov 8th at 7:30pm, Cambridge hosts undefeated, first place Kell High School, in their first-ever Region Play-in game.

Go Bears!
