Cambridge Bears Scrimmage Against Blessed Trinity, Friday Aug. 16th

Preseason scrimmages are good for putting all the summer prep-work to the test.  The results of the Cambridge Bears versus Blessed Trinity, scoreboard results not withstanding, were a mixture of eye-opener improvement opportunities and glimmers of big potential.

On the upside, a look from the sidelines finds more size, and last year's freshman have added significant inches and pounds. A few key players with injuries should return for regular season.  On the downside, the game started off with a Bears hand-off fumble and turnover.  There would be several more of these during the game.  QB and junior Brian Moore showed some good resiliency after throwing an incompletion and taking a hard hit, by bouncing back with a 5 yard run. Moore shows signs of a good throwing arm and also had good success with the QB keeper.  First quarter highlights included an interception by Zeke Gormley for a 30 yard gain.

Second quarter's big play was when the defense tipped a BT pass which was picked out of the air adroitly by Mark Phillips.  Mark will be a player to watch this season if the scrimmage is any indicator. Returning after shoulder surgery last season,  AJ Campbell looks to be 100% and put in an excellent performance with key tackles and a pass reception. Ryder Deaton and Nathan Kish showed they are primed and ready to take on the opponents!

In the final half of the game, despite again a high number of Bear penalties, there were glimmers of talent when the fast, senior running back, Dashun Soto broke through several tackles for a 10 yard gain, Brock Neilson intercepted a pass, and defensively Kryshna Tanksley and Joseph Najim appear to have their position solid on Defensive line. The Bears were able to move the ball within field goal distance twice which is a noticeable improvement over last year when they struggled to reach it.

Head Coach Craig Bennett's main goal is improvement. The team has two weeks to take the screwdriver and tighten up some of the loose ends looking to emerge viable competitors in the Region 7B, AAAAA league.   The blazingly blue Cambridge Crazies were out cheering along with a decent size crowd.

The season opener will be at 7pm Aug. 30 at Riverwood High School.  You are invited and encouraged to come cheer on your Cambridge Bears as they play All in, All the time!
