Cambridge Varsity Baseball Takes Down Alpharetta in Region Play, Thursday, March 12th
In what has been an extraordinarily difficult few weeks across the country with impacts of the Covad-19 virus felt almost everywhere a ball is thrown or caught, Cambridge and Alpharetta squeezed in a baseball game right before all sports were suspended in Fulton County.  The two rivals played the second game of a two game set, the first of which was played at Alpharetta the previous Friday, a game the Raiders won 11-1.  Not knowing what would happen after this game, the two teams played believing this could be the last game of the season.  And both sides treated the fans in attendance to a heckuva game.

Cambridge sent senior righty Casey Young to the mound looking for his fourth win on the season, going up against a tough Raiders righty.  Both pitchers lived up to expectations and were dealing in the early innings.

Young allowed a leadoff single in the first to experience adversity right out of the gate,  A strikeout, groundout and another strikeout ended the threat with a runner stranded on third.  The Bears offense wasted a Jared Spears single and a Cody Rech walk in the bottom of the first.

Young worked around a leadoff error in the second, closing out the inning with another strikeout.  Alex Moelter led off the bottom of the second with a double down the left field line and then moved to second on a Jackson Woods sac bunt.  But the offense could not deliver and the score remained scoreless after two.

Both pitchers cruised through the third and fourth innings.  The Raiders pushed the game's first run across in the fifth.  A leadoff walk moved into scoring position courtesy of a sac bunt.  That runner scored on a two-out error to push the visitors into a 1-0 lead.

The Cambridge offense bounced back in a big way in the bottom of the fifth.  Jayden Carbonell-Smith started things off with a one-out single to left.  Ryan Todd reached on a fielder's choice and raced home on a Spears double to deep center to tie the score at 1-1.  Rech walked, bringing Matt Faby to the plate.  The senior delivered in a huge way, driving a triple to deep center, scoring both runners and pushing the Bears out in front 3-1.  Moelter then launched his second double of the day to the wall in left, driving in Faby.  Woods completed the scoring with a double to left center and when the smoke cleared the Bears were up 5-1.  All five runs scored with two outs.

That was all Young needed as he closed out the final two innings in order with the benefit of four more K's, and Cambridge secured a 5-1 victory to move to 3-1 in region and 9-5 overall.

Young went the distance, allowing an unearned run on one hit with eleven strikeouts and a walk to secure his fourth win of the season.  Spears and Moelter led the offense with two hits each.  Spears had a double, while Moelter had two.  Faby had the big two RBI triple in the fifth.

Fulton County suspended all outside activities at midnight on the 12th, so it's unclear when or if the baseball season will pick back up.  Here's to hoping that more baseball is coming a few weeks down the line!

Go Bears!
